I’d love to get away from the light pollution of Taipei and see the stars one night this autumn.
Does anyone night walk? Any favourite spots? Anything to watch out for?
Well, without wanting to state the bleedin obvious if you’re going to go wandering around in the dark look out for snakes. They tend to get annoyed if you step on them. You don’t say where you’re walking but if you plan to get out of the city the standard advice is ‘stick to the path lads’ and look where you’re walking.
Other than that I’d look out for nutter drivers especially the jedi ones who can get by without headlights.
There are some great views of Taipei from yangminshan and less light pollution.
Try Orchid Island. They do tours at night. It’s dark. There are owls. I like owls.

I’ve done the owl tour. It’s excellent. Any homestay can arrange it.
I know someone who did a flying squirrel night tour with a homestay around nanzhuang.
Basically if you want to walk at night just drive to any mountain region. Lots of quiet roads.
Around Taipei you can go to Maokong, Pinglin, Wulai, Pingxi, etc.
There is this nice mountain in Jinmei, path starting somewhere behind Shishin University, going all the way to Xinhai where the funeral parlors are. Awesome views.
Has anyone tried the Park That We Keep Secret at night? I am guessing that it would be quite dark, but a noisy group would scare the snakes away.
I often walk the dogs late at night, and yep, the kamikaze scooter warriors are the worst, followed by flying roaches, snakes, and such. The worst danger is stepping on squishy living things or soft smelly ones.

Is this the Secret Park same as the Jinmei hike? If so yes I have done it at night many times. But you won’t get away from the city lights up there. Excellent night walk though. Once we did encounter a baby green bamboo viper.

The upper part of the secret park is good at night as it has lights. entrance is further round towards Xinhai. The secret park itself is very dark at night but you could take a torch I guess. Lots of frogs.
Elephant mountain is a good option as the view of 101 is spectacular. Buy yourself from headlights from a tramping store.
Yes, and if it wasn’t for the fact that I died of seasickness on the ferry and had to be resuscitated by a team of Cuban medics flown in specially, I’d go every weekend.
+1 to that, and easy to get to. Nice in the daytime too, for that matter.
