It was pretty excited when I saw this new device europe.nokia.com/A4568578 as it seems to have everything I’ve been waiting for in an all-in-one.
I was discussing it with a colleague and he pointed out the obvious “it’s not a phone - it doesn’t have a simcard”…damn.
But I got thinking. It’s got Bluetooth, so do you reckon you could use that device as a handset for a bluetooth gsm phone in your pocket or bag? I don’t know much about bluetooth, but if you could it would be a good solution for people who want an all-in-one sometimes, and at other time just want to leave it at home and take just a phone.
Looks like a possible replacement for my Axim 51v (it’s certainly a lot cheaper). Except that my 51v has a 624Mhz processor, VGA out, a 16MB video chip, takes SD and CF cards simultaneously, and supports all standard Office apps.
Yeah it’s a really sweet machine, but I don’t know WTF they were thinking by leaving out the GSM function. Interestingly, I found a bunch of tech blogs today who were praising the N810 as serious competition for the iPhone, but even those geeks overlooked the big letdown.
They tout is as the ‘ultimate in internet mobility’ but without GSM and 3.5G, it can only be ever be half the solution.

what do you think?[/quote]
I think the best thing about the N810 is that it made the prices of the N800 plummet. I’m using one of those to write this text.
To avoid possible disappointments, it’s essential to understand that these devices are internet tablets, meant to give you internet access via WLAN or Bluetooth + mobile phone (hopefully 3G). They’re no GSM phones and they’re no PDAs either. You’ll also need pretty good eyes to enjoy working with their tiny screens (featuring a stunning 800 x 600 resolution, way better than the iphone or eee-PC).
I use mine mainly to access the internet or read PDFs when I don’t want to (or can’t) use a laptop or desktop PC. It’s also great for talking over Skype without being bound to a computer (so in this sense, it’s a phone).
Concerning your question, I haven’t yet tried using this device as a handset for a mobile phone (why not just use the phone if you want to make a voice call?).
Final word of warning before my fingers freeze of: The N800 using OS2007 doesn’t seem to be able to display Chinese characters (at least not out of the box).
Essentially, it’s a great device for internet addicts. I love it.
