Old dudes and modern technology a frustrating incongruity

i have a friend who i shall call Joe .
And as we all get older we have fewer people who we may consider friends and who also consider us friends. And therefore we have less people we can rib

Here is an exercise in bringing Old Minds into the 21st century and to embrace new ideas.

Joe uses Gemini. He claims to be among the elite in Berkeley who studied AI decades ago and among a group that “fathered” Gemini so to speak

And of course he swears by Gemini in todays world of ChatGpt and DeepSeek.

Joe has been critical of DeepSeek because of its “commie” origins, similar to the abomination that is TikTok , his words, not mine. And won’t use DeepSeek. Even though i showed him how DeepSeek found exactly where he was imprisoned in Mexico by using spanish language sources!! Where Chat didn’t achieve that.

Anyhow he wants to add another Ai to the mix to “see if Gemini is telling porkies” So i suggested Chat Gpt because DeepSeek is “commie”.

He then said that he read that Chat originated in Ohio. And those gawdang ohioans have never been up to any good!! Yes, he is that person.

I have had a lot of success using Deep and Chat and i love the conversational feature of Chat being able to chat with Chat and find out a lot of stuff.

So i made a little video showing how to interact with ChatGpt and i had him follow through so he could download it on his chromebook, which he did.

After viewing this vid all he could say was “man she talks too dam slow, nobody speaks that slow, it sucks”. And “have you seen all the bad reviews about ChatGpt and this guy said no fcking way he is going to spend a dime on ChatGpt” ..yeah right but this is FREE.

Completely ignoring the fact that this is an amazing achievement that millions of people around the world can FOR FREE download this software and speak to a ROBOT who can answer you well and knowledgeably !! A frickin ROBOT can speak to you conversationally in most languages you choose and about any subject. And all he can muster is she talks too slow??? SOME PEOPLE

i said you can either stay in your shell believing you know all that there is to know already or you can open your mind !!

She even speaks like an American lady. Although she did freeze up on me, maybe she thought the convo was over, which basically it was. LIke my smart tv knows after awhile nobody is in the room watching the tv and it will shut ifself off.

It sounds like your friend has made a lot of mistakes. Keeping the hell away from DeepSeek and TikTok, however, are not among them.

fair point. I myself recently deleted tik tok again not for any reason than that I spend too much time once I open up tik tok. And hours fade away. So I deleted it recently in order not to spend all that wasted time. tiktok is very entertaining at least to me. So now I only have wasted time on the youtube copy of tik tok, But at least I have only one of those time wasters now and not two.

as for deep seek personally I use it and I don’t see any problem with having it. I use it when I want a different answer to what Chat Gpt has to say about a topic. They usually have similar answers but sometimes Deep is more in-depth.
I actually don’t get all the hate for Deep and/or Chat. I find these Ai bots very useful for me and are much better “search” engines. Why all the hate for them?

Mom can use all the updated tech, grand ma no, calls me sometimes to help. I think in Taiwan is mostly like this.
