‘Online’ Bank’s xenophobic reasoning for denying "foreigners" the ability to open an account online

So to clarify, if you’re american you can’t open this account since americans must file american taxes every year even as expats. Is that right?

Pretty sure it’s the other way around. Americans can open an account because they are tax residents of the US no matter where they are.

The rest of the world’s citizens are shit out of luck because this bank rejects every one else’s account because American laws apply globally to people who’ve never been to the US apparently.

P.S. Through some contacts the Project Manager in charge of rolling out this product has been made aware of this thread and how awful the roll out has been.

also the nonsense of not letting us using the app I hope.

Yes you can, but… you will need to go to the bank to confirm your FATCA information.

Other foreigners (non Americans) can now open online with a phone call verification. (Soon to be an online questionnaire according to one of the higher ups I spoke with)

Also I suggested that the FATCA and CRS (if you do have a foreign tax residency) form be mailed/emailed instead of going to a branch. Or even creating a simple online form.

They should change the rejection letter to one that requests further information asap

People don’t like being rejected :smiling_face_with_tear:

Exactly. and I would presume that they just didn’t think about it.

Clearly the whole team at Richart were unqualified and unprepared for the job. Otherwise this would’ve gone a lot smoother.

“Down for maintenance” I wonder if some things are getting fixed…

One more thing… What kind of a “third world country” forces its citizens residing abroad to pay taxes…? Also… ALL citizens, not just expats but also those who immigrate…

As an American you should be happy that Taiwan forces you to renounce. Also another thing… What third world country doesn’t let you resume your citizenship after you renounce… (Not Taiwan as Taiwan allows its citizens to renounce and resume)

28 posts were split to a new topic: Taxation by Citizenship and/or Residency

I didn’t mention it specifically but I got the impression that it is in the works but they wanted to start online account opening while they are still working on the app

Oh, another text message (this time in Chinese):

台新貴賓您好,因無法就您來電查詢之銀行事宜聯繫上您,請再致電本行客服洽詢。歡迎體驗智能客服 https://tsbk.tw/NNA/

Time to call

Just got approved during my lunch break.
Will check it out soon.

Still need to visit a branch if one wants to raise the transaction limits.

There is also a referral program:

  • Friends need to click the link to register, successfully open an account, and log in to earn TWD $100.
  • You can also earn TWD $200 for every friend you successfully referred.

But the referral link exposes full name. Not everyone might want to share theirs.

That’s why I didn’t click link and was not able to fill in the promo code in the beginning. Glad I didn’t then :upside_down_face:

No the bonus code worked (maybe) and has nothing to do with referrals.

I mean person who creates a referral link and shares it, will have their full name exposed in that link.
Not sure if the person signing up will be visible to the referral creator as well.

FYI it takes up to 2 biz days for the promotional interest rate to kick in after you deposit at least 1 TWD into the account.

Say you want 'em to chuck another NT$300 into your amount for the inconvenience.
