‘Online’ Bank’s xenophobic reasoning for denying "foreigners" the ability to open an account online

they just did that to me (also because I wrote a complaint to them).

You mean gave you compensation, or apologized?

I’d be shocked if you got compensation from a Taiwanese bank. :open_mouth:

apologise, they would never give you money out of the blue, must be via court order or mediation.

Where did you write the complaint? I’m going to write one too

here it is. I wrote in English nonetheless, they still read it haha.

I got to the part where I had to sign all my rights and first-born child away and gave up. It probably does mean that if I ever try again it will say you “already have an account”.

so, a few first experience updates on richart for foreigners:

The interest rate now shows correctly 3.2% as advertised. It took indeed 2 business days after the funds injection to update.

I made a first test transfer, it is not intuitive at all at first. You need to use the app to authorise or use a card reader with the richart debit card (the worst). Since we foreigners cannot log-in on the richart app, they made a device authorisation procedure, which is easy tbh but still… why don’t let us use the app in the first place? Once the device is authorised, there is a pop-up on the phone, you authorise there and the transaction is complete.

Besides the quirks, it is still a better experience than many local banks (I am looking at you CTBC with your moronic ID system for foreigners), and I am very interested also in the foreign currency deposits and FX solutions, it seems they give 4% p.a. on USD deposit without a high minimum amount (like many other banks require). I will explore that more soon.

As for me… I forgot my password and username and waiting for my card so I can reset it with my card reader hahaha

Update: they called me anyway after rejection. But uh, I don’t want it anymore

After the 3rd call they’ve opened the account!

I wouldn’t call their process smooth, foreigner friendly or online BUT they’re easily doing better than any of their competitors

third time is a charm they say right?

I do believe they will fix it quite soon, 3-Jan was literally the first day of operations for foreigners.

Baby steps, but steps nonetheless!

Hopefully they open their full offering to foreigners over time.

This is going to be my main account now. Time to close all my other accounts I never use :joy:

Also I naturalise as a NWOHR in April, here’s hoping that updating my details goes smoothly

NEVER EVER CLOSE BANK ACCOUNTS (unless they charge you fees), you never know. And it is a pain still to close accounts, faster than opening, but still can take up to 1 hr of paperwork plus waiting…
