‘Online’ Bank’s xenophobic reasoning for denying "foreigners" the ability to open an account online

I don’t want to be hassled by them to update my details

Is it possible to add a designated recipient without going into the branch?

Wouldn’t it be nice to ignore them when they ask you to do something for a change though?

Everything is working well. I’m looking forward to opening up the account fully so I can make/receive SWIFT transfers :smiley:

I understand that, but believe me, closing bank accounts is a pain. Had to go through it in HK when leaving (still left 2 accounts there, but they are free), and it took a lot of time. And HK is much more agile already.

designated, so with very high limits, no. That’s something no bloody bank does here.

Also if you close accounts and later a new employer wants you to use that bank again, it’s a new pain in the arse with us declarations, tax declarations, etc

what was so hard for you?
I just stepped into the branch, ask to close the account and in 20 minutes I was done.
The funds left are T/T to another account your provide or they just give you cash.
At least with CITIC and HSBC was quite easy for me

Wait time, giving back all cards and cheque books.

I had to close 5 accounts. It’s a pain in the arse. If they don’t charge u, just keep them. They might close them themselves for inactivity

Years ago as I recall HSBC Taiwan tried to close inactive accounts of everyone. The FSC made them go back and reopen them all. Apparently the bank can’t close them only customers can

Some countries can by law. HK has a rule for dormant/inactive accounts. If after a while and repeated contacts the account still has no activity, the bank has to close it.

Canada has similar rules, Italy too.

Yea it doesn’t really happen in Taiwan. I know there was one poster on here that had left Taiwan over 15 years ago and came back and her post account was still open and active.

Canada dormant rules are bank by bank. Some will cut you after a few months and others don’t care if it’s a few years but yes eventually they will close it. A workaround is to leave a penny in there and it stays open longer and if you really want to keep it move the penny from one account to the other every few months, boom active account :grin:

Yeah, my fiancée just got a letter from TD sayung she needs to do some movement with her account there otherwise they put it into dormant status.

I have a few accounts in Aus that have been moved to inactive but I don’t think they will close the accounts.

Just upgraded the account. Super easy, they just photo copy your ARC and ask you sign/stamp 2 pieces of paper. It took about 5 minutes.
The upgrade takes a day or so to go through.

for whomever might be interested, I just started my complaint and “picking quarrels” process against Line and Rakuten banks for discriminating against foreigners which are against the financial consumer protection act and the immigration act. I already know they will give me BS, but I need to complain first with them to the move to the ombudsman.
