‘Online’ Bank’s xenophobic reasoning for denying "foreigners" the ability to open an account online

I think that’s Richart’s/Taishin’s point too, but it’s still kind of splitting hairs as far as I’m concerned - the Richart account you can get online without going into a branch is still extremely limited…

The response in places seems to be trying to suggest that we didn’t have online banking services prior to Richart, which simply isn’t true.

But you have limited functions on your account until you go to the bank to let them look at your ID. The Richart app won’t work for you regardless of you can use the one in Chinese, you must use their crappy web app. I wouldn’t call this equal. What’s the point of being able to apply for a limited account and then have to go to the bank anyway, and even when your account is unlimited it still is crap. At least after applying in person at O-Bank I had a fully functional account same as locals.

What things do you want to do online that you can’t do with a normal banks app? Say Esun or Mega Bank?

I know what you mean.

My point is that making it “exclusive” is highly discriminatory

I’ve always just typed in the actual name of my elementary in the US, in English.

Don’t worry. AI chatbots would be able to solve this specific customer service problem according to some posters. Thanks to AI foreign banking discrimination will be a thing of the past, what would we do without it??

Do they use your elementary school for anything else than security verification?

The reason that people want to use online banks over traditional banks is that they offer better rates (interest/FEX). The Richart app is not functional off you are not a citizen. You have to use their web app which is limited. I can give you another example of this. I went to withdraw USD at Taishin at the ATM. I couldn’t figure out how to do it. Then I realized that when I set English as the language there are only withdraw, transfer, and deposit functions. So I continued the transaction in Chinese. No problem. Richart is worse. They ain’t even allow you to use the app in Chinese just because they set up a “foreigner friendly” website. We won’t get the same promotions and same functionality as citizens just because Richart wants to not allow it.

I’ve just submitted my long-winded complaint to the FSC, and I’ll try to get to the post office tomorrow to file the same complaint with the MOI.

Let’s see what happens.

That is fine if you are filling out the application as a foreigner.

The difference is when you’re a Taiwanese it doesn’t take English characters… Also even if you write your school name in Chinese it won’t accept it. Only local schools it seems

I’m not.

I haven’t had this problem, but I imagine it could be bank specific. English characters have worked fine for me.

Rickarts Chinese page would not let me type in English characters for the school name. Also as to your suggestion and lie about going to school in Taiwan, what happens if they ask me for proof of that?

I never suggested you lie about your school. If the web interface won’t accept English characters for that particular field then I suggest you contact customer support or choose another bank.

From my understanding he already has

Doing that enables such behavior

I emailed rickart and left a message on their FB page. They never responded. Time for an FSC complaint. Why not just tell me to leave Taiwan if I don’t like it? lol

Most banks will accept an English name for your elementary school, never had an issue with it.
