OORAH! Marine Gets Medal Of Honor!

President Barack Obama awards the Medal of Honor to former Marine Corps Cpl. Dakota Meyers, 23, from Greensburg, Ky., Thursday, Sept. 15, 2011, during a ceremony in the East Room of the White House in Washington. Meyers was in Afghanistan’s Kunar province in Sept. 2009 when he repeatedly ran through enemy fire to recover the bodies of fellow American troops. He is the first living Marine to be awarded the Medal of Honor for actions in Iraq or Afghanistan.

On September 8, 2009, near the village of Ganjgal, Meyer learned that three U.S. Marines and a U.S. Navy corpsman were missing after being ambushed by a group of insurgents. He charged into an area known to be inhabited by insurgents and under enemy fire. Meyer eventually found all four dead and stripped of their weapons, body armor, and radios.[4] With the help of some friendly Afghan soldiers, he moved the bodies to a safer area where they could be extracted.[5] According to his Medal of Honor citation, during his search, Meyer “personally evacuated 12 friendly wounded, and provided cover for another 24 Marines and soldiers to escape likely death at the hands of a numerically superior and determined foe.”

He was 21 years old when this occurred.

According to the NYT, he’s a pretty humble guy. Works construction now. When called to be informed of the award, he was at work and didn’t want to be standing around on the job… so the White House called back during his lunch break. asked what he’d like while in Washington, said a beer with the president. And now, "You get the medal, and you start going about your life.” Nice. Hope some good things come his way.

Americans remain divided on the war in Afghanistan. A Gallup poll in May, soon after the killing of Osama bin Laden, found that 51% of those surveyed believed the war was going well, compared with 47% who thought it was going badly. And yet there is no such division, nor should there be, in the public’s appreciation for those who carry the great burden of this long engagement.
Meyer received the Medal of Honor on behalf of his colleagues; it is tribute to him that he did so, and a reminder to all Americans that servicemen and women risk their lives every day in defense of this nation’s interests. They deserve their country’s undivided gratitude.
