Has anyone here opened a bar or a pub in Taiwan? If so, what was involved? Any liquor or licensing laws to worry about? Any “territorial” fees to pay to local gangs? Any fire and safety concerns? What other legal issues or costs?
More importantly, are you allowed to brew your own beer to sell?
I am trying to find out info about the legality of brewing my own beer for my own future restaurant. From what I have been able to find out you need: 1. A business license to run your restaurant. 2. A licence to brew beer of which to get you need to get certified as a brewmaster. Does anyone know how or where to obtain certification?
It’s a difficult business to get into. It’s an even more difficult business to maintain. People here (locals) don’t really like hanging out at bars and drinking a few. Maybe if you were to set up shop next to Shi Da or someplace with a large foreign community, you might be able to make it work, but rent at those locations are craaaazy high. I’ve never opened up a bar, but I did work at one for an extended period of time. Protection money was paid, but the “brothers” really did show up when needed. If you’re on the first floor, I don’t think there’s much of a fire safety concern. B1 is a different story. Not quite sure if there’s a liquor license. Good luck.
All I want to know is how to get a brew masters license for an individual person who has a lot of experience but not in Taiwan. Is it just a test? Any info would be appreciated.
I’ve heard it’s illegal to brew beer in the city of Taipei for retail (unless you’re Tai-Pi, of course), and that the brewpubs within city limits actually brew elsewhere (Xinbei or Taoyuan) and truck the stuff in.
I was speaking recently with someone who studies brewing with an expert at one of the universities here. I think it was Datong University’s department of bioengineering. Maybe give them a call and ask for the pijiu guy.
