Im an American that never set my foot in US. Im interested in moving to US in near future, however before moving there, i want to create credit history. Hence i want to make an account and then maybe opening a credit card.
My question remains: can i open an account (online saving account) using my current taiwan address? I am considering to open a discover OSA and secured credit card. I have some means to deposit money into the saving acc tho.
thought so, perhaps instead i need to ask my extended family for mailing address and their mobile phone number… American banking is really frustrating when youre not into their brick and mortar
Not sure what you mean by other way around. That’s instructions for opening an account in USA. You pass because you haven’t lived there. The conditions are OR not AND.
Also I think you can get an Amex card here, and then when you move ask them to move your card too, including the history.
I think the real hurdle is getting a US address. I mean, I have opened an account at an online only American bank (so there is no branch to walk into) but I needed to have a US address. You can Google “how to get a free us address” – there are free services that enable you to receive mail and only pay when you need to forward that mail
And it seems this one doesn’t even need a US mailing address. I have a Schwab account that I opened with a US mailing address when I visited a branch many years ago - I never funded all this time. But I do have a debit card from them and it doesn’t seem to cost me to have the account number
I use Shipito.com - as I said, I do not pay to have the address, I only pay when I receive something and forward the items somewhere. For example, when you ask them to send you your ATM/Debit Card or Credit Card, they send it to your Shipito address and then you pay Shipito to forward it on to you.
Do the Google search I suggested to find more. Here is a Quora discussion where many people complain about MyUS and some say they are all expensive and not well run. For your narrow purposes, it helps to be aware of the challenges so you can adjust your expectations
I personally used all MyUs, and Shipito, and my experiene with them is too bad. They both have high priceses, bad customer support, and their membership plans are as bad as their customer service. After their bad services, I used ForwardMe as my forwarder, and they are really good at this
