So I don’t know if it’s true but I think the term came from One Piece (which is a very popular Anime in Taiwan), where they have a group of people known as the Celestial Dragon People. They wore space suits so they don’t have to be breathing the same air as everyone else and they kept large number of slaves. They were ruthless to anyone else and basically tells everyone else to F-off.
I know a lot of Taiwanese watch One Piece but I do wonder if the term did indeed come from that Anime?
Before 天龍人 or 天龍國 was a thing, people used the term 台北國.
The first usage of it referring to a group of Taiwanese people was on PTT. Back in 2009, Gou Guan-ying, who was working in the US for the Executive Yuan, made some online statement about the superiority of Weishan ren, his exact phrase was “高級外省人”, called most Taiwanese people as Japanese thieves (倭寇), and the referred to Taiwan as an island of ghouls (鬼島), he wasn’t the first to call Taiwan that, but the incident popularized the usage.
As a response, netizens began referring to Gou and other privileged Late Immigrants as 天龍人. Since Taipei has a much higher concentration of such people, it was referred to as 天龍國. As a result, 天龍人 eventually changed to refer most people in Taipei or even people in Northern Taiwan.
Tianmu is often considered even more privileged than other parts of Taipei, and is jokingly called the capital of 天龍國, called 天龍城.
It generally has to do with the arrogance of people from greater taipei and them feeling superior to the est of us local monkeys. Not much really to do with government funding although that may be a part of why they have become so full of themselves.
Agreedb but has little relvance here. Within taiwan there are distinct cultures. Taipei is most certainly the king of looking down at their own nationality. Down south, people just look down at women, poor people, diasabled and darker skin colors! Somehow gay is ok compared to those groups. Probably the pollution and hormone mutations being the norm…
