Outcry as Chinese engineers eat dogs in Zimbabwe

DOG-eating Chinese engineers have caused an uproar in Matabeleland South where they are installing transmitters.
The behaviour of the Chinese who have a penchant for dog meat has unsettled villagers who are now jealously protecting their animals which should naturally guard them.

Matabeleland South police spokesman, Tafanana Dzirutwe confirmed that police had arrested two Chinese nationals after evidence was found that they were slaughtering dogs at their makeshift camp.

But he said the two were warned and released because Zimbabwe does not have laws regulating how people can slaughter dogs.
Concerns about the eating habits of the Chinese were raised after dogs began to disappear in the area.
The village headman warned his subjects to be careful about their dogs’ movements.

Some of the dogs did not just go missing. The Chinese workers offered cash for the dogs, considered a delicacy by the Orientals.
Local workers claimed they had seen the Chinese buying the dogs for as little as US$10 each before brutally killing them.
The dogs are reportedly tied with wires around their necks and hung from trees so that they defecate, before being struck with iron bars on their heads.

The situation caught the attention of a Harare-based animal rights campaign group, Veterinarians for Animal Welfare Zimbabwe (VAWZ), who together with the Bulawayo chapter of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), travelled to West Nicholson outside Gwanda town in Matabeleland South to investigate.

VAWZ spokesperson, Meryl Harrison said villagers had witnessed the killings, but were reluctant to talk.
The headman then accompanied them to the top of a kopje, where they found two Chinese men, camped next to a transmitter.
“On investigation inspectors found the wire in a tree, a pool of dried blood underneath the tree, several pieces of dried dog meat hanging up and, some distance away, a dog’s paw and tail,” she said.

Harrison said a fourth dog was to be killed the following day. A report was made to the police, leading to the arrest of the Chinese, though another one had since relocated to Mutare.

The Chinese were due to appear in court last Monday, charged under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
However, they have since been released, because the police claim that “Zimbabwe does not have legislation stating how one should kill a dog”.
A livid Harrison says the Chinese should have been charged under sections 3(i)(d) that criminalises any action that “causes any unnecessary suffering and 3 (i)(g) which deals with a person who “cruelly causes or permits any animal to be tied up or confined”.

“We cannot believe that the perpetrators of such appalling cruelty to three innocent animals are only given a warning, when the legislation is provided for in Zimbabwe’s Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act,” she said.

Orientals? Where on earth did you dig up this article? From the Antebellum Times?

Last week I had rabbit at a new local French bistro. Delicious. :astonished:

Are you suggesting that it’s okay to eat Bugs Bunny but not Lassie?
:ponder:

And only infidels eat pork. What and who one eats is very subjective, of course. But it is right and righteous to become enraged when someone steals your pet and companion and eats it. Besides, they’re Chinese doing business with the butcher Mugabe: of course one should pour scorn on them and their ilk.

Murderous bastards.

here’s some interesting reading:

The Jews and Christians are also forbidden from eating pork. Here is a quote from the Old Testament to that effect: “And the swine, because it divideth the hoof, yet cheweth not the cud, it is unclean unto you: ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead carcase.” Deuteronomy 14:8

Many Christians believe that this verse was directed only at the Jews. But Jesus himself says during the Sermon on the Mount; “Think not that I am come to destroy the Law, or the Prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.” Some Christians say that, after a vision by St. Peter, God cleansed all animals and made them fit and lawful for human consumption. If ALL animals are cleansed by Peter’s vision, this includes dogs, cats, vultures, and rats: but you just don’t see people getting excited about a cat-meat sandwich like they do over barbecued pork or bacon. Others say that it was Paul who rescinded the law forbidding pork to humans, in order to appease the Romans, who enjoyed the taste of pig-meat. Many excuses have been given, but none are very sound.

It is not the eating dogs that is the issue. It is the extensive torturing before killing. I have never heard of getting them to defecate first, but I have heard (and unfortunately seen video evidence) of tying the dog up and beating it before killing it. Makes the meat more tender.
The longer the dog stays alive during the torture, the better the taste. Some “butchers” pride themselves on how long they can keep a dog alive while they beat it before it dies from trauma and injuries.

Obviously I would be right pissed if someone hurt or ate my dog, though. Cultural mores make me squirm even about the eating of dogs I have never seen.

Generally cat-meat sandwiches are not served because cats are predators who eat meat only (dogs are actually a bit more omniverous). Carnivores are at the top of the food chain and because of our trusty friend biomagnification, the meat has all sorts of nice heavy metal concentrations. Pesticides, too! The liver, commonly eaten in herbivores, is very dangerous to eat from carnivores. Vitamin A levels so high you won’t care about improving your vision anymore. From an economic perspective, it takes something like 7 times as much grain to get a kilogram of meat as it does the equivalent amount of protein in grain. Since carnivores eat herbivores, that factor is obviously higher, though I am not sure how much higher. Lots, I guess.

As far as pork goes, it is dirty. Trichinellosis probably isn’t much fun. I wouldn’t imagine people 2000 years ago were cooking all meat in even temperature ovens such that the flesh was thoroughly cooked and safe… Seems to me back then not eating pork was much safer than eating it.

I’ll give you this: Mugabe is the bigger butcher. But that is another thread.

Someone needs to alert Trump that they’re eating elephants in Zimbabwe.

I seem to recall the ‘black Hitler’ Mugabe used to eat them. And in the US, didn’t that hip hop clown Jay Z and other ‘celebs’ wear elephant hide sneakers?

and the immigrants are eating dogs in Springfield too, don’t forget…

DJ and JD swear it’s true, even when they admit to making that shit up.

Lol, yet another ironic point in this saga:

That’s not really calculated to win over your neighbors

Totally bizarre.

My cat’s gone missing. The foreigners must have eaten it. I must inform the police.

Whatever, just deport them all back to Haitia.

We’re used to foreigners around these parts, but I guess in a small town it’s a bit more of a shock. Not to say this person isn’t a total moron.

She did apologise, I suppose. I’d be interested to see how she worded the apology.

That’s true.

An interesting cultural difference is in the UK immigrants were alleged to eat swans when I was a lad.

That was more likely to piss off the conservatives, seeing as the Queen owns all the swans in England.

Well, she used to. When she died her son inherited them all, i guess.
