Pak Kababish: Halal kebabs and wraps in Ximending

On a rare excursion to Taipei’s Temple of Tat (that would be Ximending) I caught the smells of the subcontinent on the breeze and my nose led me to a little stand run by an older Pakistani gent. He does a range of kebabs and chapati wraps - we tried the chicken tikka wrap and the lamb kebab and both were excellent. Prices are NT$50-80 a pop. I think the place is in some way affiliated with Aaleja, of Yanji Street and I’d say this place is definitely worth checking out if you’re in the area and in need of a snack.

Thanks for the post, Taffy. We went there tonight and had the wraps, which were very good, so I will go back. Having said that, I must point out a couple of shortfalls. It’s not enough having just one man running the stand, especailly in such a busy area. We waited at least 20 minutes to get our hands on those wraps. Another one is my pet peeve. I just can’t stand seeing the same person handling cash and my food with the same bare hands. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth, sometimes literally. But I have to say the food was good.

I agree with that. The fella who made our food had plastic gloves on when he made the wraps, and took them off to handle our cash. I remember thinking at the time “better hygiene than most food stalls”. A different chap, perhaps.

On the waiting thing - yeah, you’re right. It wasn’t 20 minutes for us, but the stand wasn’t busy and it still took a while to get our food.

Oh yes… Aaleja… that lovely Indian restaurant that I used to love – until they decided to cut down cost of their nicest dishes and are now slightly overpriced for uninspiring taste.

Also I hope those wraps are more authentic than other ‘shaweima’ stands in Taipei… (I call them “fake shorma”) I’ll go & try it some time. Thanks for the tip.

I remember there being another stand about two, three years ago in Ximending. Vendor was a Palestine guy that time but disappeared after a while.
