I thought I’d share my very strange experience of the past 3-4 weeks.
My tongue has been swelling up every day for about a month, so much so that it pushes against my teeth when my mouth is closed and causes bite marks all over. The tongue coating also disappeared on the front parts of my tongue, making it appear smooth but raw like it was injured. At first I thought it was diet because certain foods exacerbated it more (it’s been painful to try and eat Subway), but no matter what dietary changes I’ve made nothing made too much of an impact. Today is was pretty bad, so I brushed my teeth several times hoping to wash away whatever was causing damage, and that’s when I finally noticed – the more I brushed, the worse it got.
My symptoms were swelling of the tongue, which would sometimes spread to my gums, the inside of my cheeks, and my lips; a “burnt-tongue” feeling like you get after drinking too-hot coffee that has persisted for a month; irregular salivation; pain when using my tongue to speak.
Suddenly it dawned on me that I’d switched toothpaste brands 3-4 weeks ago. I’ve been using Day and Night (德恩奈) and decided to rush out at 2 a.m. to buy Darlie (黑人), which I’ve used for years. One brush of the teeth and months of suffering ended.
In short, if your mouth is unhealthy, consider that it may be caused by the very thing you rely on to maintain your oral hygiene.
Good Lord. Good think you found out what was going on. What was special bout the toothpaste that was causing problems? Any ingredients in there different then Darlie? Darlie is actually pretty good.
If you google keywords like taste buds burning toothpaste, you’ll find lots of consumer complaints against other brands. The mirses wants me to tell Apple Daily but I can’t be troubled to do that. I’m not feeling to great (unrelated?) but was planning on comparing ingredients a little later.
Good for noticing, though I wonder what specific ingredient caused your reaction. Knowing what they put in food, do you really trust what they put on locally made toothpaste? Seriously, man, imported toothpaste and shampoo and soap, heck, I even use a water filter… in the shower.
Next scandal du jour: toothpaste. Joins the dishwashing liquid, detergent, shampoo, etc… etc… etc… ad nauseaum.
I am paying through the nose for a fancy Italian toothpaste now, but I had a load of Arm and Hammer from the US -though I distrust US brands as much, knowing many use raw materials from China. Next iHerb order will be toothpaste. Got enough shampoo and soap for the rest of the year.
BTW, I can recommend this awesome organic French liquid soap, great for couples to use, if you know what I mean…
BTW, Day and Night is imported from Germany. So that’s why I gave it a try. I’m going to stick with the local, racist brand from now on. (Darlie is actually owned by Colgate, so it’s not exactly local, but it is exactly racist.)
Some toothpaste (colgate) contain ingredients similar to that found in laundry detergent too, sodium laureth sulfate or something like that. And that can be irritating as well.
It’s imported from Germany (at least some of it…the old switcheroo is a common problem in Taiwan, but it looks like it’s a Taiwanese company behind it).
Toms is great. So is Trader Joes inhouse brand, but you dont get traders there (yet).
Hey weird thing but I rarely used Darkie (err Darlie) toothpaste when in Taiwan, but its not bad.
Need someone to bring me a tube next time they are in Calif (hear that Chris?)
Yeah, update: Even after switching toothpastes and trying no toothpaste at all, I’m still having tongue and throat problems, though less frequently. I don’t get insurance for another month in this hellhole third-world broken state (when it comes to healthcare, anyway), so I can’t do anything about it until May.
That was my first line of investigation, but it’s pretty clearly not the case. This started in January or February while I was still living in Taiwan; now I’ve been stateside for over a month and its still going on. My entire diet and lifestyle has completely changed, yet the problem persists. I’ve found it’s also linked to a few other problems:
[ul]It’s worse when I’m hungry[/ul]
[ul]After I eat, I have a build-up of phlegm in my throat[/ul]
[ul]It seems to be better during weekends[/ul]
So my suspicion at this point is that it’s stress-induced, though I’ve never heard of anything quite like this. I can post super gross pictures if anyone’s interested.

I’m no doctor, but it sounds like hives to me. I had a case once that caused the soles of my feet to swell up to the size of grapefruits. It was so bad I couldn’t walk for two days. The doctor asked me what I’d had to eat over the past few days, and when he heard berries he said that was the most likely culprit…apparently developing a temporary allergy to berries is really common. He also said another common cause is stress or lack of sleep, and that it can happen anywhere on your body. He gave me an antihistamine, but said most cases resolve on their own, so hopefully that’s what you have!

Thrush is a common mouth infection. There are OTC medications for it you could try.
