So we all know that Uni-president has bought out Carrefour and that some time this year it will get a new name. In the meantime, I am now noticing that Carrefour brand products seem to be disappearing from the shelves. Recently there was a sale on Carrefour brand nuts, and I am very fond of the garlic peanuts, but they sold out quickly. I guess a lot of other people liked them, saw the good sale price and bought the shit out of them. I really will miss those nuts. I am also noticing that the Carrefour brand pasta sauces are disappearing, and are currently marked down, although I found the price of them to have gone up rather astronomically recently, 109 for a 420 gram jar of sauce? Get the fuck outta here! But recently I found one for just 59, actually a pretty good value…. I should probably go and buy as many as I can now…. Anyway, what Carrefour brand products are you going to miss?
I also like the garlic peanuts. The local peanuts are too hard for my liking.
Yeah, noticed that too! It was only a matter of time, though… ![]()
Personally, I’ll miss the Carrefour joghurt (a pack of two small ones for $24).
Pasta sauce also wasn’t bad - just like you say a bit overpriced recently… Although other brands seem to be even more expensive…
And: Dishwasher salt. Crazy expensive in Taiwan - the Carrefour branded one was still somewhat reasonable…
ditto…
So many things are gone. The Carrefour brand sesame buns are also gone. The dough of the Carrefour brand one is whole wheat and with no or very little sugar added.
Another thing that I already miss is a lot of the Carrefour brand cheeses. I think they phased these out a while ago, especially the ones that expired quickly as they would often go on clearance for about half price a lot of the time. Damn peasants here just can’t appreciate cheese enough and don’t know the difference between good quality cheese and processed garbage.
I better go check the peanut selection! it’s been awhile. Probably all gone. The spicy ones were good too.
Local garlic peanuts I bought recently were ridiculously hard. Felt like the geniuses are reroasting/refrying already cooked nuts. Terrible.
I stocked up on Carrefour tubed tomato paste weeks ago (shoulda bought more than three) and have recently got random stuff in the sale section I might not normally buy. Cocoa powder, couscous, canned peaches, “eco planet” dish soap…
I stopped going to Carrefour when they stop selling cheap eggs. They like big margins.
First they took away our Jason’s and I said nothing…
Then they came for our Carrefour’s and I said nothing…
When they come for PX Mart who will be left to speak for it?
(Apologies to whatever quote I just butchered)
My Carrefour still sells 10 eggs for 50-60nt.
I don’t think Carrefour had very good quality products nor are they reasonably priced. Very few discounts
However I see why folks would miss select ones.
And yes if there are less imported selections that’s a bigger problem, that would be back to the bad old days in Taiwan.
As for peanuts due to trade negotiations they are opening up wholesale important of American peanuts soon, Yunlim peanut farmers are doing their nut in. Yes it’s a bit sad I actually retained this news.
Yeah, their pseudo sale prices with the jacked up fake original price are still a feature as far as I can tell. And forget about produce for the most part.
The house brand peanuts, yogurt and a few other things were good value.
And just as RT mart started it’s own house brand it got eaten up by PX and I don’t think they’re continuing it, but I could be wrong.
Looks like a golden opportunity for the supposedly discount German Lidl or Aldi, would make sense for such a price conscious society, but I think the French attempts might serve as a warning instead. It’s interesting how many int’l markets Carrefour has dropped, it’s quite a few.
I think the market in Taiwan is simply too small for those…
You forgot about Wellcome…..
I’m also going to miss their generic brand ice cream….. decent quality, size and price! I’d better stock up soon before they’re all gone for summer.
I’m also concerned that they will stop carrying the saucisson that they seem to have irregularly already…. I found some on clearance today at the big Carrefour near Zhishan station, I got two and they don’t expire until May 17…. Not sure if that peasants that are taking over will continue to supply it….
Costco is always full. But Costco target locals with Taiwanese Koreans Japanese ultra process food/snacks, used to be better. Snack culture is too big.
Yes pls.
However like anything here it has to adapt to local tastes. So it would just end up another supermarket but selling Aldi brand versions of all the typical taiwanese snacks etc.
would be great if they could bring in Trader Joe’s stuff here…. I do believe that they are owned by Aldi…. and what’s the deal with Taiwanese people at the Trader Joe’s bags these days? It’s like they’re being sported around the city as if they were LV or Hermes bags, lol…..
If you go to the local supermarket (like 814 we have here down south), you can get the peanuts in the plastic bottle with the red top, I find these are nicer than any packeted ones. I just don’t dare ask where they come from or how they were processed.
