Phone company competition drying up

Just noticed that Fareastone is buying up Asia Pacific telecom and Taiwan Mobile is buying Taiwan Star.

I know those two small telecoms were not foreigner friendly but it can’t be good for pricing once it’s back to the big 3 oligopoly.

It seems like the wagons are being circled in Taiwan even with groceries with Carrefour getting bought and Wellcome before that. Just becoming all giant conglomerates

its the same in many countries, and many industries too…at a certain point the economies of scale win and SMEs can’t stay in business.

Different in the U.S.
A dozen or so of 2nd-/3rd-tier telecom providers that piggyback of the big boys’ (Verizon, T-Mobile, etc.) lines at cheaper rates, but quality less as can be bumped off line in peak hours.

I am going to Taiwan soon. Should I just go with Chunghwa for telephone and internet service? Thinking of grabbing a Chunghwa SIM at the airport with 30 days unlimited internet just until I manage to get an apartment. I don’t think I’ll be using a lot of data outside after my first 30 days.

Taiwan Mobile. $999 phone and home combo is unbeatable.

For that price they can keep the phone, I’ll take two homes!

How’s the coverage around the island?

It’s a big company. Nationwide. Very marginal differences in both directions between them Chunghwa and Fareastone.

You get home broadband plus unlimited 4G. 5G and higher home speeds for $1199. Spend more money and get more speeds.
