So, I’ve heard the “Pineapple on pizza” argument throughout various threads over the past 25 years, but there is no dedicated forum for that specific topic, until now.
I’ve eaten it. It’s ok. Nothing to write home about. I’ve never ordered it for myself. I will eat any other pizza before I reach for a slice of a Hawaiian. Almost every get-together in Taiwan where pizza is purchased always includes the Hawaiian pizza and it’s usually the first to disappear. So, apparently Taiwanese like it and feel it’s a good idea.
As for pineapple, I love it. Yeah. I used to live in Hawaii and would eat it very often. My wife brings home fresh pineapples for desert and it’s a staple of our fruit basket at home. It’s not Lychee, but very delicious and enjoyable. On a pizza though, average feelings.
My Dutch American auntie on the other hand, whenever I visit her, she asks me to stop by the local pizzeria in town and buy a large Hawaiian pizza. She loves it. If were to show up with merely a “Meat Lovers” pizza, she’d probably dash me over the head with it. Yes, Auntie loves pineapple on pizza.
Here’s the article I read which prompted me to make this forum to begin with. Good article regarding the history of “The Hawaiian Pizza”.
So, let’s hear your arguments for or against pineapple on pizza AKA The Hawaiian.
Let the blood letting begin.
Don’t pineapple coat your feelings, tell me how your really feel!
I’ve attempted to make a fun poll and allow a maximum five choices if necessary.
Pineapple on pizza (The Hawaiian)
It’s complete sacrilege.
I’ve tried it, but hated it.
I’ve never tried it and I never will.
I get pissed off every time I see it at a party or get together.
I relentlessly bully anyone who eats this garbage.
I’ve tried it, it’s ok, but nothing special.
I’ve tried it, and once was enough. Never again.
I’ve tried it and I love it.
I order it all the time.
I’ve never tried it, but I am open to trying it sometime.
I’d eat it if I were starving…but I’d eat a lot of stuff if I were starving. Taiwan has enough disgusting pizzas as it is without the big-noses contributing to the mix.
And the pineapple isn’t even fresh. Who wants to eat canned fucking pineapple? Not me.
Only two foods I don’t like, boiled organ meats and two, anything cured by lye (e.g., lutefisk) or tasting like ammonia (e.g., poor quality century eggs).
Everything else is fine. Pineapple on pizza is ok as long as I’m not buying.
I like it and eat it sometimes, I don’t really get why people are bothered by it, or food in general, if you don’t like it move on.
Why let it live rent free in your head, are you just moaning to get attention?
I will quite happily cook things I really don’t like for other people, and I’m happy when I see them enjoy it, if you don’t like something fair enough, but don’t be a misery and try to spoil some one else’s enjoyment, what right have we got to tell someone else what they can enjoy?
All the bullshit about culinary integrity, thats just posh folks trying to feel superior, traditionally we have always eaten whats around us, the world is now our store so mix it up a little, you like it good, you don’t just move on.
Pizza is just one of many types of flatbread, you can put what ever the hell you want on it, I mean its only ham and pineapple its not as if its Vegan pizza
I grew up eating it. I wouldn’t say it’s my favorite, but I don’t hate it. It’s definitely better than plenty of other pizza toppings, like anchovy mentioned by Van.
I don’t get the hate honestly. I do love traditional pizza, but it’s not like it’s that old of a cuisine. Like sushi, there should there are plenty of room for experimentation as well. It’s not like people are passing it off as traditional Italian pizza, it’s name “Hawaiian”, feels like if anyone should get offended, it’s the Hawaiians.
Technically deep dish pizza is even more of a departure from tradition than Hawaiian pizza, but I still love a good deep dish slice as much as a slice of a traditional Italian pizza. As long as it tastes good, I don’t care if the presentation is traditional I guess.
