I’m looking for a tool that would help me check all romanization in a document and suggest the correct Pinyin (whether Hanyu or Tongyong) for non-English phrases it finds. I suppose what I’m looking for is something like the feature on these forums that inserts Pinyin into posts, but I guess I need a Word macro or something …

this company (Unique Information System corp.)
has a product that adds phonetic symbols or converts Chinese text to pinyin (Hanyu or TongYong) or Bopomofo. It also allows you to place the phonetics anywhere you want to (right, left, top, botttom) and change colors and fonts. It gives a drop down menu for selecting the correct pinyin for characters with multiple pronunciations.
It is a slick product, but they haven’t targetted Chinese learners yet. I am not sure if they have a version for English operating systems.
Their web page emphasizes their input methods (part of the same package of software) and doesn’t say much about the pinyin tools, so you might want to give them a call for more details.

Not quite what I was looking for … I want more of a “spellchecker for pinyin,” that will pick up wade-giles or other romanization types and substiute the correct Pinyin. Not that it’s back-breaking work to do it by hand but it would be nice to have the process automated anyway.
WG2PY is a program (DOS and Word macro versions) that will convert Wade-Giles to Hanyu Pinyin. I use the command-line version occasionally, never having gotten the macro to work.
Of course, you need to be very careful about automatic conversions, not because the programs are wrong but because the source material so often is.

It’s damn useful but why not have a system that changes directly from Chinese characters to pinyin? There used to be a great site (http://greysoft.net/Greydict/Pinyinizer.aspx) that did just that but it hasn’t worked for a while. Do you know what the score is with that? Are there any other sites that can do the characters to pinyin convertion?

NJStar word processor includes Chinese character to pinyin convertor.
It also has a sort of spell checker in that it highlights pinyin error as you type.
It can also deal with Wade-Giles and Yale and also has the means to create your own input method - Incidentally it also deals with SC and TC and can instantly convert large documents between the 2 systems.
