I’m just noticing we don’t seem to have an education forum
Anyways, for what it matters, PISA score are out. Taipei does quite well (rest of Taiwan maybe included). I notice Shanghai isn’t included anymore
If anyone digs into the details, I’d be curious to see if there is a comparison of how many hours students spend in class, in cram schools, and doing homework, by country.
Of course the rest of Taiwan is included. It’s called Chinese Taipei because OECD is a UN body.
The report shows how happy students are at school as well and Taiwan ranks well across all metrics. The other thing is it’s also one of the only countries where pupils’ performance improved after the pandemic.
I’ve seen it for sports, because China is sensitive. China also only administered the test in Shanghai previously, so there is precedent for just using one city. I’d want to dig into the methodology and see if they clearly say they include all areas of Taiwan, or just a Taipei-centric sample, though.
I’m also still curious about hours in the classroom. I think many other countries have shorter semesters and no cram schools. Self-reported happiness is kinda meh as a variable of interest to me.
The post-covid bump isn’t a huge surprise, other countries were doing school online if at all, Taiwan was mostly spared from the worst of covid (one reason I chose to come here)
Sounds like it is Island wide because - on the site you linked - they are saying “In Chinese Taipei, 5857 students, in 182 schools, completed the assessment in mathematics, reading or science, representing about 190 800 15-year-old students (an estimated 93% of the total population of 15-year-olds).”
The TW website is also looking like its national level:
