With Taiwan becomign so popular for expats, do you feel pressure to learn Chinese? Or is language a non-issue for you?
Go to LangPats: Language and European expats in Asia and the Middle East
The LangPats research project, funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO), is investigating:
- why some expats learn Mandarin, while others do not, even after many years of living in Taiwan.
- what type of expat is more/less likely to learn Mandarin.
- how employers can better support their expat staff.
If you’re a foreigner living in Taiwan, it would be awesome if you would help by completing the LangPats survey about your language experiences. Doing so, you can enter the draw to win a dinner for two!
The project is run by me, Dr Nathan Albury-Garces, a sociolinguist. I will be in Taiwan in March for follow up interviews.
The project will also provide practical advice on how to build and make use of language skills while living abroad.
The project has received ethics approval and participation can be entirely anonymous.
Thank you. I really appreciate your support!
Dr Nathan Albury-Garces and the LangPats team.
