I keep getting reports about an American who was shot by a police officer in Taichung. Does anyone have any information?
No news on this here at CNA and even the “reporters” here (as they affect to call themselves) would probably have noticed such a thing. Somebody else is winding you up.
Three people have contacted me about this over the last month with almost identical stories. I doubt any of them knew each other.
Drunk American (of course) gets picked up for drunk and disorderly. Goes to the police station and pulls a Paul Clark with the same result. While the police are taking turns beating him one of them drops his gun and the drunk American picks it up. The American then gives it to the cop and the cop shoots him with it.
It sounds pretty out there to me as well but a close personal friend said he met the guy with a hole in his leg and was told the exact same story.
I don’t believe it as I know many of the FAP in Taichung and they are not the type to drop their gun or shoot somebody in that kind of circumstance.
The problem is that I know from personal experience the local beat cops don’t call the FAP when the encounter a foreigner while on duty no matter what the problem is.
Probably just one of those rumors that is self perpetuating because of it’s nature.
And I know from personal experience that they do.
And a drunk foreigner acting up and getting shot in a copshop would DEFINITELY be picked up by the media. Or is this another of your great conspiracy theories?
And this so-called story is a month old. And its perpetuation is a direct result of idiots who believe and pass on every crazy notion that they hear. Are you really so gullible? With you in charge of your overseas American nonsense, I’m only glad my birthplace precludes me from ever becoming the focus of your attention.
I take it you haven’t heard anything either.
Thanks
It was in the Apple Daily absolutely ages ago. I mean, like, when I actually still had a job !
Boomer, since you fancy yourself a private investigator let me give you a free bit of advice based on my many years as both a public defender and prosecutor…just because some dingbat mails, emails, calls or sends a telegram saying x happened don’t accept that view. As is obvious, at that point you only have half (or less) of the story. I thought of this the other day when some “crazy” named Perlmann got a hold of me with his story that the local cops had implanted something in his brain and were then coming to get him. I hung up on him.
And as long as I have your attention I really do wish you would get rid of your title a Head Guy of the self created Overseas Americans in Taiwan. You do not represent anyone but yourself. You do not represent me and I guess in a sense it does not really matter, but since I constantly rag on the locals for their “mom and pop” NGOs with the innanely grand titles (e.g. the International Formosa Human Rights Association, membership:2, mom and pop) I feel that “due process” requires that I rag on you too.
If you insist on having an NGO, perhaps as a tax dodge or to convince your parents you are “doing something” in Taiwan, or to put on your resume in lieu of “english teacher” please rename it the Boomer International Association of Lost Causes and Wild Rumors or some such.
Oh and by the way, you should have put a question mark after the end of your topic sentence for this thread. The reason I clicked over here was because I thought somebody had information that the cops had-in fact-shot an American. Really what it is is you just stirring up shit. The correct heading is:
Police Shooting of an American in Taichung (Taizhong)? (note the ?) and I am not nit picking; there is a big difference between those headings.
Brian
If you read it in the Apple Daily it must be true, that’s all I know.
Oh, yes. I rely on nothing but the Apple Daily for my news here in HK.
Especially the news in the girly pages. Does the Taiwan edition have the girly pages?
I hate to say it, but in my opinion Boomer is rapidly gaining the status of ‘resident paranoid nutcase’ that was reserved for Aristotle. Also very glad I’m not associated with this by accident of birth or nationality. :phew:
Excuse me but it was just a question. Sorry for wasting your band width.
I am surprised to hear that it was in the paper, even a tabloid. That explains where this got started and why so many people are taking it seriously.
Anyone have a link?
I put this question here because it was one of the regular posters here on Forumosa that contacted me about this repeatedly and asked me what the story was. I didn’t know then, I am not sure I know now.
The fact that it made the local paper/tabloid and not Forumosa has me a little concerned. A rumor is not an official rumor until you read it here on the net.
Mr. Kennedy I am sorry that you don’t like the idea of an American Advocacy oriented NGO but aren’t you the head of the Canadian Society? If I am not mistaken the Canadian Society is a Canadian advocacy group, they also have a an internationally respected human rights lawyer to head it. Wasn’t that Society once nothing but an idea then a small group of people trying to do something?
The Overseas Americans in Taiwan has no head person, as it is too small at this point. Unlike other foreign human rights advocacy groups the Overseas Americans do not solicit donations or accept them.
For the record I wrote human rights advocate as one of the professions listed on my visa application. Following the requirement set down by the government on properly listing my stated purpose on my application form. I am therefore a legal American human rights advocate. As well as a teacher, writer, IT professional, husband, father, rabble rouser ( just liked the sound of it) and other (I ran out of room).
I wouldn’t really call them pages. There’s usually only one girly picture (usually Japanese) per paper. But the girly picture is often next to a great sex advice column where college students ask questions like “I had a wet dream last night and then held my girlfriend’s hand today. Is she pregnant?” or “How can I convince my girlfriend to do the stuff you see in Japanese porn videos?”
I think Brian’s point was that people using the name of Overseas Americans spread rumours and are not involved in any activities that genuinely protect or benefit Americans or their interests. I have been left with the impression is that it is an organization so small and inactive that to call it an NGO is ridiculous. The Canadian Society, on the other hand, is exactly what it claims to be.
Is this article still online? Not I want to know cough. I have a friend you see… ![]()
Aren’t the Canadian Society, and AmCham, organizations that are both registered with the government? Boomer, is your organization registered here?
I suggest that the Overseas Americans adopt the designation of club or even group.
A lawyer once told me “Never ask a question publicly you don’t already know the answers to.”
Inquiries have been made with different NGO’s, lawyers and government agencies in Taiwan concerning how a foreigner rights advocacy group like the Overseas Americans can become legally registered in the R.O.C.
AmCham here in Taichung took 7 years and a ridiculous amount of money to become legally registered. They still only recently had their registration approved because of local political support.
The rules for registering a Non Govermental Organization are much the same for registering a business. Small “Mom and Pop” NGO’s for foreigners are nearly impossible. The red tape involved could be used to circumnavigate the globe and in the end it must be majority controlled by R.O.C. citizens.
I suppose many locals won’t see the irony of having a foreigner advocacy group controlled by R.O.C. citizens. It hasn’t been lost on myself.
The Overseas Americans in Taiwan is in the process of becoming a legally registered NGO in the United States. As we are Internet based and clearly focused on protecting the basic human rights of Americans on Taiwan that is the appropriate place to register. If in the future it is decided to open an office in Taiwan the registration procedures will be reviewed at that time.
The Overseas Americans are currently considering opening an office in Florida as a member who was also unjustly arrested and deported from the R.O.C. has offered free office space and full support.
Now back on topic.
Was an American shot in the custody of the ROC police in Taichung and why doesn’t the leading foreign human rights lawyer in Taiwan know or care?
Boomer, how come you’re the only one who hasn’t figured out that Brian already answered your question?
