POPEYES was coming, now it's here!

Fried chicken as it is is already salty and loaded with carbs and fat. Adding a sugary glaze over it just makes it more unhealthy. It also makes it more difficult to eat if the chicken pieces are big and with bones, which is how I like my friend chicken. I also want the batter to turn out crispy but not too thick. Adding the glaze means the breaded part has to be crunchy and a bit thicker to avoid being soggy.

The original concept probably came from Chinese food with smaller and boneless fried chicken or pork pieces, like Tangcu rou, or Ganpeng ji.

I would bet it came from fried chicken in BBQ sauce, hot sauce or Gravy form American troops.

That’s the best part! It’s deep fried twice for the extra crunch. I love KFC (Korean Fried Chicken) but I hate the other KFC. Or all other fried chickens for that matter. For me, it’s Korean or bust.

Brilliant

I predict 4-hour queues before it closes down in less than a year.

Lots of fried food are fried twice, once in low temp and once in higher temp.

You probably don’t eat this trash food, but I think Hotties has good chicken and waffles

I can’t see waffles on the menu: am I showing my ignorance? Is waffles in this context just fries?

Chicken and waffles is a new(ish) southern American dish where you put a big piece of deep-fried chicken breast between two pieces of waffles with syrup and eat it like a sandwich.

The first few bites is tasty, but then you want to throw up after that.

I had once and didn’t get to the second bite.

I bet Taiwan could teach their corporation a thing or 2 about how to fry chicken  Hopefully they can teach Taiwan a thing or 2 about food safety.

I bet these 2 points are near impossible to coexist :upside_down_face:

Is it really new-ish? We’ve had it in Chicago as long as I can remember, so I always figured it came north with the Great Migration 100 years ago or whenever that was.

Sounds like pizza hut, dominos etc. The free market will decide. And if they decide wrong, the FDA will either intervene or help out

No idea. Newly popularized, perhaps.

I used to love going to chicken and waffles places, but my favorite thing to order there is greens.

No way that I’m going to use that much butter to cook my vegetables at home, but if you only have it once in a while it’s pretty darn good.

It’s really waffles. Had it today. Maybe old menu?

I miss good southern greens. At least I can make turnip greens here. I haven’t seen mustard greens though.

Upon closer examination: confusing menu. Their E Combo lists “Crinkle Fries, Maple Syrup”, which is what had me wondering if I’d been thoroughly misled about what “waffles” meant in Southern (?) food. The English doesn’t include waffles, but it’s there in the Chinese, and in the picture.

The menu’s from March 2024, somewhere under Photos and/or Menu on Google Maps.

Warning the “maple” syrup ain’t real

Oof, yeah, the scheduling’s a pain isn’t it? Avoid it for the first months while it’s crazy busy - but try to catch it before the menu gets too localized, and/or it closes entirely. Sometimes there’s only a narrow window when it’s a good place to visit. I’ve had that happen with a few places over the years.

Ah yes. I used to wonder why the Indian food I cooked at home didn’t taste as good as in the Indian restaurants. Then I added enough ghee to make it taste equally … rich? And it was good. And I shall never do it again.
