Potential merger between Shinkong Financial and CTBC or Taishin

There is a bidding war

Good. Taiwan is way overbanked. There only needs to really be 4-5 large retail banks. What’s missing are the fintechs.

Eheh, regulator can’t care less and doesn’t even want that!

What? There is no way consolidation of the banking sector is ever a good thing.

Who in their right mind would support a market moving toward a monopoly?

5 nationwide banks plus some regional banks and the international ones are plenty for TW. Then u have those useless online banks who don’t cater to foreigners.

Some consolidation is good to get critical mass to actually make it worth to work on new functions

There are too many banks but I think the large ones shouldn’t be allowed to merge. Get rid of all these small banks that don’t have any economies of scale.

One problem: Some of the smaller banks are the most profitable. There was a post on Linkedin, apparently the local regulator has a metric which tracks bank profitability per employee to measure which bank does the best job and #1 was… 上海商業銀行 (Shanghai Commercial) which has 75 branches compared to Fubon’s 179. Their branches often don’t look like much but their trade financing and loan business is making bank.
