No internet when the air raid practice time comes
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Air raid drills in northern and central Taiwan next month will include the shutting down of mobile internet for half an hour, reports said Saturday.
Are they saying the internet cut off will only happen in the north and central and we will just have the normal shelter in place? are they splitting it up north and central next month and southern in a different month (not the usual different days on the same week)?
or is this just shit reporting from Taiwan News giving us half the information?
Some dates for this “Urban Resilience Exercise”—to be held in conjuction with the older annual “Han Kuang” military exercise—appear in this article published in today’s Taipei Times:
The first drill is to be held on Aug. 10 [2026] from 2:30pm to 3pm in central Taiwan, affecting Taichung, Chiayi [C]ity and [C]ounty, and Miaoli, Changhua, Nantou and Yunlin [C]ounties.
In northern Taiwan, the drill is to be held on Aug. 13 [2026] from 2:30pm to 3pm, covering Taipei, New Taipei City, Keelung, Taoyuan, Hsinchu [C]ity and [C]ounty, and Yilan County.

JUST IN: Taiwan to restrict mobile internet across areas home to 70% of its population during drills simulating a Chinese invasion.
We will see riots in the streets… WiFi is a basic human necessity. Take their food, water and housing, but do not dare to touch their internet 
If this means fewer idiots watching youtube videos on their phones while drifting through MRT stations, I am for it.

Fixed-line internet, indoor Wi-Fi, landline telephones, military communication networks and dedicated networks used by high-tech companies will not be affected.

What is the point of this? This isn’t going to train anyone to “cope” with real disruptions if China invades… it’s just going to annoy and inconvenience those who are relying on it for work and communication.

In the beginning of Covid in upstate NY, after we’d been sent home with orders to wait, when the dead were being stacked in refrigerator trucks on the streets of NYC, we lost the internet for a few hours. It freaked me out. I’m a fairly rational man.
I don’t expect riots — but thievery? Maybe— opportunism? Surely.
What it should be is a surprise. Also the time of the drill should be random at some point throughout the year with a select few knowing the actual date.
Folks, this is a chance for emergency workers to PRACTICE. It’s also a chance to let the wider public know that this situation could happen, so people are less likely to freak out if it happens.
People starting to steal stuff without cell phone access? Hell the thieves nowadays rely on cell phone access to run their scams and schemes!

Anyone remember the big (and unexpected) power blackout of the summer of 1999? I recall reading a story in an American paper about that a little while later. The reporter was amazed that there was no looting, etc. Instead, people who were up mainly just went outside and chatted with their neighbors. No big deal – at least not to most people who weren’t in an elevator at the time.
When the bars moved table and chairs out on the streets, and filled up big buckets with beer bottles in cold water, to get the beers a bit cooler. Luckily cash was still king then as no chance of using credit cards without power
WiFi is still going to work, isn’t it? My understanding from the article is just mobile internet will be gone—5G, 4G I suppose, whatever else fits in that category.
I’d be surprised if they can somehow shut down my home wifi router yet maintain my fixed-line internet connection.
