If you read any textbook, they will tell you China got rich when Deng opened up the south. The real simple reason China got rich is the gov got out of the way. Say what you want about the Chinese when it comes with Taiwan and human rights, they are industrious.
Xi has been doing the opposite. Don’t get too big like Jack Ma. Local gov is no longer the wild west doing what they want to grow their region.

Why would China feel the compulsion to invade anytime soon? With China’s primary diplomatic competition being so laughably self-destructive right now, all they need to do is come across as the better (read: even slightly less shitty) option for the world to get behind. It’s a fucking gold rush level of opportunity, regarding further chipping away at US soft power. The bar is VERY LOW right now to be seen as the most civilized, stable adult in the room.
A kinetic invasion of Taiwan would be the equivalent of throwing shit into the world’s ceiling fan. Why would they squander this diplomatic field day offered up by the Trump admin, and instead antagonize the semiconductor dependent developed world all at once? How myopic that would be - remember it’s Trump that has myopia in spades.
So yeah, ironically I think Taiwan is safe from any unexpected invasion for now. Trump selling Taiwan down the river for random xyz and/or further enriching he and his cronies is my main concern.

I mean if you subtract the whole “crazy administration with nukes who have already shown they have no issue violating international law” angle, sure I guess.
But think of second, third order effects. They get Taiwan sure, but they squander a TON of respect from the world at large - and that is just the tip of the iceberg. I think when the cons are weighted against the pros, the victory (if that is even possible with all of the defense options Taiwan has at its disposal) becomes pyrrhic very quickly.
Why not continue expanding their BRI and continue salami slicing away at the rich and politically connected here to try to mold Taiwanese society into becoming more and more pro-China instead? They satisfy their objective without jeopardizing their relationship with the rest of the world via looking like thugs/supply chain issues/world war 3.
They have much more to lose by overplaying their hand here. Trump has bolstered their long game strategy and is possibly catalyzing the harvest, not given them a different method through which to win. The risk is just too much for any country to tolerate.
