Previously Abused Dog Now GOING TO US! CAN U FOSTER TO 2/19?

[Edit: Was "Previously abused dog now available for rehoming … see last post for update]

AnimalsTaiwan recently took in Lai Foo, a young dog who had spent his entire life alone on a rooftop, in all kinds of weather, either locked in small cage or chained to a wall. A concerned neighbour, Eric, an ex-Forumosan, had persuaded the owners to let him take the dog.

When Lai Foo arrived at the AnimalsTaiwan holding centre, he was very keen to play, but hesitant to approach. If we approached him, Lai Foo would do the strangest thing: he would wag his whole body in delight at getting attention, but at the same time snarl and bare his teeth, snapping at the hand coming to pet him.

It was only after another of Eric’s neighbours came to visit and explained more about Lai Foo’s ordeal that the reason for his strange body language became clear: alone and bored crazy on the roof, Lai Foo would bark to attract a friendly face, but his cries for company were met with horrible abuse; his owners and their maid would beat Lai Foo with a stick and, if his calls for attention carried on, would tie up his muzzle with electrical tape. You can imagine the torture this dog went through in the hot summer months up on the roof, unable to drink or even pant. The neighbour would go see Lai Foo and untie the tape, and the poor canine would go to his bowl and drink for minutes non-stop.

Lai Foo has been conditioned to expect abuse in return for company.

But this wonderful dog has made rapid progress in the few days he has been with AnimalsTaiwan. He is learning how (and loves) to play with other dogs and that there is no need to fear the people he also craves as playmates and company. He can now approach for a cuddle without snapping at fingers, and will soon be able to wag his whole body without also feeling the need to snarl in fear.

Lai Foo loves people, and he’s also good with cats (he’s sharing a room with two right now). He is learning he doesn’t need to bark for attention, and every day is getting better at walking on a leash. He is also completely housebroken.

This beautiful and healthy young dog has been neutered and fully vaccinated, and will soon be available for rehoming. We feel Lai Foo would suit a home with calm, patient people who understand that carrots work far better than sticks, and he would definitely be happier with another dog for company while you are at work.

If you would like to open your home and heart to Lai Foo and show him that there is a very different life to the abusive one he has known, please contact me today on 0920 620 109 or at the e-mail address below. Lai Foo is dying to meet you.

Thank you.

Sean

Will someone please explain to me why people who would treat a dog like this even wanted a pet in the first place? Why buy a dog if you can’t be bothered to look after it? After all, what good is the dog to the people when he is locked up on the roof? He couldn’t even have been useful as a watchdog up there.

We have encountered several people who ‘rescued’ a dog from the street and kept him or her locked up and lonely for years and years, all the time believing they were helping the poor animal. It’s not always about cruelty, but about ignorance - even their methods to prevent barking could be blamed more on a lack of knowledge of how else to go about it. :s

Goddamn, he’s a real beauty. As is the spaniel cross in the other thread. He’s got a real intelligent-looking face on him.

I went out to visit Sean on Monday and this dog is awesome. I was giving him some great cuddles and he didn’t mind one bit (understandable really).

I just wanted to pipe up and say this is a very healthy dog, with a great nature and he will make an awesome companion.

Thanks, Truant.

Yeah, I should point out that, despite the abuse he has been through and his current fear that it’s not all over, his snarling and snapping are merely that - he has never bitten anyone. Lai Foo is just very scared and wants to frighten you away from hurting him but doesn’t have the capacity to hurt you himself.

He really is a fantastic dog - come meet him and see for yourself.

Nice dog pics. The top picture is an absolute stunner. Stray Dog, did you take that photo?

I did, and thank you, but I really have to thank my model; he’s the stunner.

Lai Foo is making incredible progress, and already no longer snarls or snaps (99 percent fo the time) - not even at Sandman! :bravo:

Please consider offering this long abused young dog a loving home for life; he really, realy deserves it.

Sean

I managed to pay a visit to the Animals Taiwan facility in Shihlin yesterday and can’t say enough on how overjoyed I was to see a new, happy Laifoo romping around the place.

The folks at Animals Taiwan really deserve major props for allowing Laifoo to quickly bury his painful past and so adeptly learn to put his trust in a leader. Of course the ingredients were always there with him being so loving and playful from the start. He particularly enjoys splashing his head and front legs in a big bucket or plastic container of water and fishing out a ball or other object to play with. Good luck getting the ball past him if you bounce it off the wall.

Having to witness his predicament was depressing to say the least. But thankfully, after a sudden unexpected chain of events, he got that long waited chance to escape from a life in imprisonment. Originally he came from a litter on one of those streets or markets in Wanhua shortly after the start of the Year of the Dog.

Now, if he could celebrate Christmas, New Years and his first birthday in a new happy home and loving family, boy that would just be the icing on the cake. The only thing you would have to worry about is he might lick you to death.

Once again a big thank you to the Animals Taiwan crew and Forumosa Pet Center. If you or someone you know would be interested in this handsome boy, you are practically guaranteed your fair share of good fortune and luck (the meaning of “Laifoo” in Chinese).

He’s what we used to call a “smiler,” ie., he bares his teeth while wagging his tail. Funniest thing you ever saw. He’s really great. He sure did like my bottle of porter, as well.

I had been pestered the past couple of weeks by the previous owners of Laifoo wanting to see him again and check out how he was doing. I looked forward to that about as much as going to the dentist and having someone pull out your teeth, but today, after running out of excuses, I took them over to Animals Taiwan to see with their own eyes that the dog they were mentally suffocating was now a very happy and healthy pooch. It turned out to be an eye-opening experience.

After a great exchange with Stray Dog and the AT volunteers, I think they are now willing to recognize their faults and of course want to wish Laifoo the best. Apart from the chunk of sicko and psychopath animal abusers, as it has been mentioned, a lot of people have their heart in the right place, but simply won’t recognize the demands in having a happy and healthy dog or cat in the family. Now, by seeing up close the changes in Laifoo so happily romping around and interacting with humans and animals instead of slowly going crazy in a cage, they wanted to thank Stray Dog and the Animals Taiwan Team for what they had done. And as a bonus, on the drive home, they were showering compliments about the concerns and efforts that groups like AT are trying to make on society.

Anyway, the good news is that Laifoo is looking and feeling better than ever and poised to be somebody or some family’s best pal. He’s got all of the ingredients for the perfect pet - playful, energetic, handsome and of course extremely well behaved and affectionate. If you or someone you know may be interested being adopted by this jewel, send a PM to Stray Dog, myself or just stop by the Animals Taiwan facility and check him out. THKS!

Tonight is his first time in with the pack, and he seems to be doing fine. We had some attempts a week or so ago, but Lai Foo really didn’t know how to carry himself, and attracted too much aggression. Tonight, I am glad to report, he is out there, tail held high, and a smile on his face, and he knows not to get in anyone’s face.

Bless him.

This guy is 100 percent ready for adoption. Just have a ball waiting for him and he’ll love you forever.

LaiFoo is heading west! He will fly to the United States on Feb 19 of this year, and it would be great if he could find a foster home until that time.

If you would like to meet this wonderful dog and help him on his continuing progress and change in fortune, please contact me today.

LaiFoo is housebroken and quiet, walks well on a leash, is loving and attentive, and would deeply appreciate your help.

Thank you.

Sean

Hey Sean,
I will be happy to take him. I don’t know if this works for you due to my location. Something to think about, and remember I will be in Taipei this weekend. My dog is male, but doesn’t have an alpha bone in his body and always gets on with the others I bring home. I also have 3 cats running around that might try to show him who’s boss. Let me know.

Mr Tiger, I will take you up on that happily! Thank you.

See you at the weekend.

The only obstacle is transportation. I can’t take him on public transportation, can you get him here?

Absolutely.

But to ensure you’re not just trying to get a free ride, you’ll have to take the bus.

LOL,
I also have a new teacher to take care of that day, can we leave by 12pm? I was thinking I could make my way to your place and check it out, then we can go. Sound good?
