Private Language Schools in TW

Dear Readers,

I want to go to Taiwan to study chinese this summer for atleast 6 months. Ive noticed most Mandarin programs are run at universities or affiliated schools all around the country, but I would prefer to study at a smaller private institute. Can anyone recommend any privately run chinese schools?

Ive been studying chinese for a couple years now having spent some of that time studying at a private language school in mainland China. Theres tonnes of private schools in China but ive been having difficulty finding such places in Taiwan which provide intenstive courses and small classes, I dunno whether Ive been looking in the wrong places or they just dont exist.

Thanks for ya time,
g1z

Their group classes tend to be oriented toward beginners, though.

Hey Guys,

I’m staying in Taipei and want to audit or take private classes to learn Mandarin.

I want to concentrate on the spoken form. I hear TLI does just that.

Are there any alternatives to TLI in Taipei in the private domain ?

I am not interested in applying to Shi-Da or other public schools.

Thanks in advance.

In Taipei, Found “International Han Institute” across from Shi-da on Heping and quite impressed. They train both students and teachers. I am impressed with teacher. Have taken Chinese classes at Shi-da, Chinese Cultural University, and tutors from TLI and the teacher here is as good or better. Definitely better than TLI. They try to match student with teacher.

Private tutor starts at NT$350/hr with reduced rates if paying in advance.

Amazing price considered some Chinese tutors on Tealit are asking for $NT1000!

Found this list of private schools, not sure how dated.

Yeah, but that’s ridiculous - just some Taiwanese thinking , well, if foreigners can charge this, why can’t I?
When you pay the private language school NT$350 an hour, the teacher is getting less than half. Even teachers at Shida will be willing to teach privately for around that price - a friend of mine sent a fax and asked. Or advertise around universities - you should be able to get a private tutor for NT$250. I got mine that way and he was great.

I’m wondering a little bit, if this is accepted in Taiwan  but isn’t this illicit employment (?)? Or do all the teachers at the language schools earn so little that they don’t have to pay taxes?

I don’t think it’s illicit. I don’t even think it is immoral - the school has overhead and the boss has to make a profit. Some of the teachers at TLI, for eg., have been there for years, and teach full time.

:roflmao: Good f&%$ing luck with that!

My Chinese teacher (male) is brilliant, has a host of students and asks NT$350/hour or NT$500/hour and a half.

I once had a teacher that asked NT$450/hour (female) and another that asked NT$550/hour (female). Both sucked rotten dog c&%k and I cut them loose after a few lessons. I was fairly green back then and didn’t know any better.
It’s ironic how the most expensive ones were women and sucked and the cheapest and best is a guy. The only exception is the wonderful teacher I had for three months at NCKU. She was absolutely brilliant. When she left, I left.

Besides, a beginner would probably benefit more from small group classes at a uni or somewhere like TLI. :2cents:

Well, yes I heard that bosses of language schools tend to have quite some money.

But I wonder if you pay the teacher directly … will he pay taxes?

If you teach a private, do you pay taxes on that?

Are there any private Chinese learning language schools/buxiban in Taipei zhongxiao section 4 or 101 area?

Every “International” school I found so far only teach English.

Hello,

I’ve noticed that there hasn’t been any movement on this post thread for a while, so I hope some will still look into it…

I’m moving to Tainan this month, and would like to find a mandarin school, preferably a private one, for me and my wife. We have been taking Chinese in mainland for a couple months, but are still beginners. Can anyone help me with some references for private schools in Tainan ?

Thanks,

I first came here and studied at TLI and I found them to be an utter shambled, there were 6 in our group class 3 of us left. None did any further group class at TLI. I then studied at SHIDA which was great, whilst there I also got a tutor from the han Institute, which was cheap and she’s excellent. I study 6 hours a week there and am further ahead than my shida classmates studying 15 hours. The price is nearly identical. If I have to miss a class, han have never charged me, TLI did.
