I hope this is the right place where to write
Anyway, today i wanted to pay rent, and Iām already late
, but no banks near my house let me withdraw. The problem seems to be that I donāt have enough money in my account. Of course I immediately checked online with my bank, fearing the worst, but thatās not the case! I have enough money! So whatās the problem? And the staff didnāt know what to do or just didnāt believe me when I explained Iām sure I have enough money. They said to check with the bank in Europe and as soon as itās not 5 in the morning anymore Iāll do that for sure.
This is not the first time it happens. Last time my European bank said it was not a problem of theirs too.
So I wanted to ask, since I have to wait anyway, is it true that the Taiwanese banks canāt help me find out whatās the problem or are they being lazy with me
? And when they start laughing at me and just say āyou donāt have money anymore!ā the word lazy is the kindest I could think of.
I assume you are talking about having a European bank account. As I know, any olā bank will not have access to your foreign bankās information and funds. I believe that if you call your bank they might have the error or rejection codes that might explain why you cannot withdraw money.
In the past you have been able to withdraw money in Taiwan from that ATM card?
Last time I withdrew was three weeks ago, from the same bank I went today. I have an Italian bank account and I already asked on May, the first time I couldnāt withdraw, if there were some kind of bans or blocks with Taiwan and they said no, that my debit card should work everywhere without problems. The day after I tried with a different bank and it worked again. Boh. I really wonder, also because a friend of mine had the same problem just two days ago. He tried to withdraw from an ATM in the Mrt and it said he had no more funds too.
Dear Sir:
If you are paying rent in Taiwan, please open an NTD account. Kindly pay your rent on time as we non-Taiwanese have enough to deal with here WITHOUT OTHER FOREIGN RESIDENTS ADDING MORE GODDAMN FUEL TO THE FIRE.
Thank you for your attention.
Best regards,
Guy
That sounds really annoying and it doesnāt point to any issue other than the Taiwan ATMs are not reliable.
Take note of the banks that do accept it. (also Try to use Mega bank or Bank of Taiwan ATMs those are ābiggerā banks)
Thank you for your help, Best_intentions
Iāll try again this afternoon with other banks. After I found out that yes, I still have all my money Iām not even mad or that worried anymore.
And thank you Guy for your answer too, even if I would suggest you a cup of chamomile.
It can sometimes be the case, that you have to ānotifyā the Bank, when you go on holiday or visit another Country. You can do this online . The āsystemā can reject cash withdrawals automatically, if outside your normal spending habits. Just a possibility , and worth putting a 3 Month visit to Taiwan, maybe?
I know your Bank may already know you are here, but the left hand often does not know what the right hand is doing in the World of Banking.
Thanks! Iāll buy you a cup of coffee after you sort this out.
Guy
Itās definitely not the fault of the Taiwan bank and their customer service team wonāt be able to help you. Does your Italian bank card have that Cirrus mark on it? Keep trying different banks. I had a visitor here from Germany who had to go to 3 different banks one night before he found an ATM that would accept his card. It ended up being a Hwa Nan bank (at first sight, not one of the most āinternationalā looking banks) that allowed him to successfully withdrawal money. Keep trying different banks and I hope you find one that works!
Thank you all for your advices ![]()
I just contacted my bank and theyāre sure my account and debit card should work. They said itās probably just a connection problem, that the system could have been down for a while and that maybe tomorrow everything will be already sorted out. Strange that it happened the only day I wanted to go shopping ![]()
Iām counting on it, Guy! ![]()
Same situation here: Italian credit card with Maestro and Cirrus logos and random withdrawal capabilities. I have been able to withdraw up to 20.000ntd in one time, but both the times when it actually worked and the maximum allwed sum have been (and still are) totally random. Neither my bank in Italy nor the one in Taiwan (obviously) were able to give any explanation apart from giving definitions for the error codes, which are not always the same anyways. I never got the āout of fundsā error, for example. I also experienced similar problems with my Austrian atm card.
The max atm withdrawal for ntd is ntd20k at most atms. You can withdraw more but not in one transaction.
I have withdrawn 50,000NT from a 7-11 several timesā¦as you say maybe I had to do 2 transactionsā¦but maybe itās a bit higher than 20k limitā¦I donāt remember having to do 3 transactions? In fact I thought I did it in one transaction ? Rule 1: never withdraw large amounts when drunk. ![]()
I believe the limit amounts may refer to limits set by the banks ⦠Daily $100,000 limit for multiple withdrawals; Transaction Limits for non-designated accounts are $30,000; and withdrawal limits are $20,000 for individual withdrawals. I have hit all of those limits more than once.
Some banks may offer additional limits that are looser or stricter than those. They may offer looser or stricter interpretations when 3rd party international banks are involved. Perhaps, international cards have different limits⦠I donāt know.
So Iām not the only one! :s Today I tried again in different banks, maybe 5 or 6, and I mostly had the same results. In the last one I could withdraw enough to pay the rent and 5000 ntd in two different times but when I tried again it didnāt work anymore. Three people from the staff helped me but they sincerely didnāt know what to do. Iāll wait a couple of weeks to try again. I really hope I wonāt have to suffer like this every time ![]()
If i was you i would, instead of molesting the bank in Italy, try to clarify the whole thing with the local office of your card company in Taipei, for instance,if you use mastecard:
mastercard.com/us/company/en ⦠tions.html
Some atms donāt accept foreign cards even your logo shows up on them (cirrus - maestro). The atms in seven eleven should normally work. The easiest way is to open an account locally or in Hong Kong for example. Then you wonāt have these problems anymore. As far as the max transactions, in seven eleven the biggest number you can choose on the screen is 20k.
My problem ( and I suspect othersā as well) is that part of my income is deposited in European accounts. I rarely need that money, but when I do I have to cross my fingers and hope that I find an ATM that works within the first 10 tries.
Like someone said above, Iāve had the best luck in 7-Elevens.
