The great Caribbean Canadian writer Austin Clarke has a book called Growing up Stupid Under the Union Jack.

I’ll let forumosans figure out an analogous title for the folks you referred to.

Looking for an interesting museum exhibition this weekend?

The Taipei Fine Arts Museum has a special show on architecture in Taiwan from the late 1940s to the 1980s. During this period, American influences along with attempts to Sinicize modern architure appeared, along with surprisingly little known contributions including Pritzker Architecture Prize winner Gottfried Bohm’s work in Houbi Township in Tainan:

It looks like a thought-provoking show, unfolding the many complex factors impacting Taiwan during this relatively closed and repressive period. The show is on until June 30.

A nice detailed write-up on this exhibit appeared in today’s Taipei Times.

In a feature-length article, David Frazier expresses his evident enthusiasm for and knowledge of the varied architectural movements washing over Taiwan during this era, as well as his reservations about what he calls a “heroic model of history” informing the curation of this exhibit, a model that side steps, in Frazier’s critique, many of the shifting formations of settlement in Taiwan including the architecture of military villages. This is a very informative read!

Saw that there were some European artworks on display in Tainan. Some Van Goghs and some good ones too!

Will try to find a link.
