Hi, does anyone know of any shop anywhere in Taiwan that sells raw almond butter or other raw nut butters or raw sesame paste/tahini? Either imported or domestically-made would be fine. Thanks so much!
You can get in most baking supply stores, I was recently at a food show and they where demoing I home machine similar to the link below (I didn’t get their card just eat the samples).
I think Trinity sells that. I’ve never tried it though, and it seemed a bit on the pricey side IIRC.
I’m guessing you’re asking about stuff for eating so this isn’t useful, but I’ve bought raw shea butter before from one of the shops on Tianshui Road (for cosmetics/soap, or at least that’s what I used it for — it probably wasn’t food grade). They have cocoa butter and stuff like that too.
That looks to be essentially a specialized grinder? I think you can do the same thing in a decent food processor (I remember a YouTube review of mine specifically showing it being used for making peanut butter).
Thank you for your reply, marasan, but do you know whether that product is made from raw nuts and seeds? Usually, when it doesn’t say “raw” on the package, it’s made from roasted nuts/seeds.
Thanks so much, Andrew. Have you seen or heard that Trinity’s tahini is raw tahini? (as opposed to made from roasted sesame seeds) By the way, I have never heard of Trinity before. Googling now, I see a Trinity Indian Store; is it that one?
Yep, that’s the one — they have several branches around Taipei.
I don’t know about the specifics of this tahini. I wasn’t looking for it at the time, but it did seem pretty processed so I’d assume it’s probably not what you’re looking for. I think it’s this one I saw:
In case you or anyone else is interested, I checked, and it turns out that CookBox in Kaohsiung only sells roasted hazelnut butter and roasted sesame paste (no raw butters/pastes).
My personal preference is usually toasted vs raw for such butters like Almond. Just think the taste is much better. As for health wise…just avoid any added saturated fat…just get pure/only almond.
Trinity’s tahina is made with roasted sesame seeds. It’s very good and it’s very similar to the kind one can get in other parts of the world to make middle eastern dishes that require it.
I started making my own tahina with sesame seeds bought at a local dry goods store. Much cheaper and quite tasty. Just mixed it with some avocado oil and salt.
I would say that most nut butters sold in Taiwan are probably roasted.
