I am Taiwanese American. I joined my cousin’s HHR to finish the citizenship process and just received notice from NHI about applying. I’m wondering - if I don’t plan on moving back to Taiwan for more than 2 years (and at that point, can just move back in the HHR with my own) - can I just not sign up for NHI until I move back to Taiwan? Let the HHR move out and that removes the obligation to pay the premiums?
This question seems to be asking the same but it looks like the law was changed in Dec 2024 - hence the thread title: is there any negatives to move out HHR after I finished the citizenship process?
Since the suspension system no longer exists, the 3-month minimum rule is now irrelevant. Your options are:
- Pay NHI premiums continuously until your household registration is automatically moved out after 2 years abroad
- Voluntarily cancel your household registration to immediately stop NHI obligations
