Red Radishes. The small round spicy ones you put in salad

Anyone seen these in Taiwan…or can suggest similar substitutes?

Thanks.

I second that. They’re one of my favorite salad vegetables.

I love those things. I’ve had them on a FEW occasions here only, though. Always from a roadside vendor – those guys with the wee plastic baskets of produce from their little plots – never from a commercial source. Its a real pity.

The Liberty Times had an article last week about a couple in Yangmei, Taoyuan County, who raise organic vegetables, including “yīngtáo luóbo” (which I think are radishes).
Fūqī tóngxīn – yīngtáo luóbo qìsè hǎo

It says they sell them to supermarkets, such as the one in Shin Kong Mitsukoshi.

I used to grow them in my little vege patch when I was a kid. They’re really easy to grow … you just scatter the seeds on the ground!

Thanks people,

Cranky - that’s a helpful lead and much appreciated.

Sandman - I live in your neck of the woods. How about we give each other a shout if we see them around.

I’m good for scoping the sellers on both sides of the footbridge. If I see any I’ll get some extra, stick 'em in the fridge and let you know. Don’t hold your breath though – I haven’t seen them there for a couple of years.

I’m sure I saw some in Jasons recently, but they weren’t cheap.

I just saw a stand in Miaoli County with someone selling radishes – organic, I think. NT$50 per bunch.

Ms. Zhang, the woman running the stand, said she could mail these. So if anyone really, really wants some radishes they could probably work something out with her. Tel. 0931-497-392. I didn’t get the impression she speaks any English.

I’m growing them on my balcony, along with daikons and carrots. I just toss some seeds in the same pots that grew the summer crops. They seem to be doing well so far, despite the cold and damp.

Hehehe… cold… hey, where I come from the poor bastards (radishes that is) has to survive the odd frost spell (and even snow sometimes) if they’re unlucky. So I have a feeling they won’t suffer too much on your balcony

The radishes grew just fine, despite the cold earlier. We did pick off a few caterpillars every day so they wouldn’t completely destroy the leaves (we don’t want to use pesticides). Radishes grow very quickly, btw. Plant a few every 2 weeks in some pots on the balcony, water them every day or two, and soon you’ll have a steady supply. Couldn’t be easier! Here’s our first harvest:

Oh sweet
Where did you find the seeds?

I think [url=http://tw.forumosa.com/t/hand-vacuum/57170/6 has them.

I saw them on Facebook. Yum.

Funny, I’ve been here quite a long time and have yet to see a red radish in any produce mart! I’ve seen the seed packets in stores like Carrefour but that’s all.

  1. Are radishes eaten here? Who buys the seeds?

  2. Are the radishes that those seeds produce edible?

You’ve seen seeds? I imagine they would grow here, but only in winter. Just get yourself a window-box … not like they take up much space.

I like them too, but I never seen real live radishes in the shops either.

I love radishes, and buy them whenever I can. As well as putting them is salads, I like to slice them up and put them in cheese sandwiches.

A few years ago, the Xindian Carrefour actually had a batch of them from New Zealand. They were top quality, bagged in New Zealand, and very reasonably priced. I bought loads of them while they were available, but I doubted they’d be available for long, and sure enough, once that batch was gone, they never reappeared.

A few months ago, the wife bought a bunch of locally grown ones at a market in Taipei. But they were very big, and nowhere near as delicious as the Kiwi ones or those I used to buy in England.

I’m a little surprised that they’re not more popular here, since I would have thought they’d appeal to the taste of plenty of Taiwanese.

You’d think so, wouldn’t you … but I guess Chinese people generally are not big on salads. And of course if the growers are letting them get too big, they’ll be horrible, so nobody knows how they’re supposed to taste.

Unfortunately, unless you see some imports, it’s just not the right weather to grow them here now.

Bumping this up … I don’t suppose small red radishes have started to appear in Taiwan, have they?
