Relocation: Taiwan to Europe

Hi there.

I’m intending to relocate from Taiwan to Italy. I have about 3 cubic metres of stuff - maybe even a little over that. Mostly, it’s packed into boxes.

I got a quote from Green Van for NTD 120,000. Sounds a bit steep, but it’s door to door (even though I have no “door” at the European end just yet).

Has anyone had any recent experience with international movers that they could share here?

Thanks in advance for all suggestions.

Depending on how heavy and the actual size of individual parts, you might be able to take 10 or more suitcases and pay far less than that price for Excess Baggage.

It’s good idea, but also depends on destination in Italy, like if Sardinia on Ryan Air it. three bags max (paid) x 20kg, so it may take more than one trip. If light DHL/Post might be option for door to door

The destination is going to be northern Italy - probably near Turin (Torino). I think doing it by excess baggage might not be feasible. Three cubic metres is pretty huge - like, more than 25 big boxes.

Well then the door to door rate might be ok for 25 boxes. From KHH to Genova a container cost that much (port to port, not door to door though), and could take a few months (not sure how quicky you need it).

Apart from the shipping cost, would anyone be able to recommend a company that they’ve dealt with? I’m beginning to have some misgivings about GV as they take a loooooooong time (sometimes days and days and days) to reply to any queries.

I wonder if @Andrew0409 would have any advice on this matter?

Guy

We have experience from Taiwan to the UAE (maybe gives some idea of pricing).
Glory International Logistics price (by sea freight) was 43k NTD for 260kg in 19 boxes.

Is all of that stuff really worth taking?
Maybe selling and rebuying is the better option.

Also, be careful about appliances because of voltage differences.

Yeah, I’m not taking any 110v appliances. And the stuff I’m taking is going to cost much more than the quoted shipping to replace.

So I have some bad news. My understanding is that it’s complicated to do this if you want to avoid taxes. I shipped my own clothes to me once and it was taxed pretty ridiculously.

One way people seems to get around this is to ship them as luggage. I believe there’s still lots of paper work. I guess it will prepare for Italy :joy:

This company is often used but I’ve not used them myself. You might want to check with them on if they can do it from Taiwan to Italy.

My honest advice is take what you can with instead.

Or it might be easier to fly business or first class with an airline that lets you bring a bunch of bags.

When I sent my heavy stuff back via a shipping company in Taipei (great price), I had no tax issues as I had a ‘transfer of residence’ document/number valid for 2 years. Surely Italy does that too?
Expensive stuff was sent by air mail.
Maybe Italy receives surface mail from the post office?

EMS might be cheaper. Door to door and easy to track, ship, recieve etc.

$7,080 per 30kg box to Italy. I use ems to Europe weekly, including Italy, very convenient. Expensive, but seems cheaper than that quote you have

I’ve used Steven’s Moving to ship a similar-size cube to the US. It was expensive, but because Steven worked with me on storing my stuff until I had a ship-to address it was worth it. Excellent experience. I’d definitely recommend asking them for a quote.

Which shipping company did you use?

I have the details somewhere, but I posted a link in another thread in the last few months here. A shipping company thread, I think. I have posted the link a few times since 2020.

I saw at Roma, a person with 6 big boxes as luggage, was lucky no checks that day. Might want direct flight to avoid lost bags
