Clarification comes with certain punishment.
I actually became somewhat skilled at using a long dowel rod to poke and prod the TV controls from my seated position (though I was always afraid that the dowel rod would slip and I would smash the TV screen, as Cato from the Pink Panther did…).
In the 80s, we then upgraded to a set that allowed channel surfing via infrared remote control, but in one direction only (you could go to the next sequential channel, but not the previous sequential channel).
