Context: my country in has stopped providing consular services for large category of its citizens, and I don’t really want to go into details in this topic. But you can find it in the news.
My situation: my passport is valid for 2 more years and then in all likelihood I won’t be able to renew it. My spouse is Taiwanese national. I’m thinking to visit Taiwan this year and apply for ARC.
Eventually this ARC will expire, will I be able to extend it or legally reside in Taiwan in any other way, without valid passport?
So why not renew your passport before you move to Taiwan?
I recently renewed my passport with two years remaining on my other passport as I wanted the newer version with biometrics which makes it easier for travel to some countries now.
Yep.
In U.S., you can renew passport whenever. Don’t have to wait til less than one year (if need to renew for similar reasons).
If I were OP, I’d renew it now (whatever country), get the typical 10 years before expiration, and then work on a plan.
They wont give you an ARC past your passport date, they will give you up to that date then when you get the new passport they will give you a new card with the remaining time.
How does it work for APRC holders? I assume they have your passport expiry date on record. Can you stay in Taiwan on an APRC and an expired passport (assuming of course you don’t plan on travelling anywhere)?
