Thanks, someone might find it useful. However, these days email attachments have mostly supplanted the need for a fax machine. Of course, you do need a scanner in order to “fax” a document by email. Fortunately, it’s pretty cheap to pick up a combination scanner/printer. I have an HP Deskjet 1510 scanner/printer, which works really well with Linux. Can’t remember exactly what I paid, but I’m sure it was under NT$2000. As always, it’s the inkjet cartridges that are a ripoff, not the machine itself.

Anything for incoming faxes?

There are still some institutions that require documents by fax. International wire transfers (from the US to Taiwan) for example. It makes no sense considering where we are with technology but they do.

Yes, there is a service in Seattle that forwards incoming faxes by mail. Didn’t include it here since i didn’t think anybody in Taiwan needed it.

“Mostly” differs from region to region. In Japan, for example, fax telephones are generally cheaper than scanners and easier to set up, and, more importantly, they don’t require an internet connection to be useful for the transmission of document images. We, “world citizens of the 21st century” are always connected to the internet, but the majority of people I know locally is not. Many offices appear to be connected to the internet because they have a homepage (when you check you find out that it is outsourced) and a mail address - often not working because nobody checks reliably and because spam filters eat half the messages anyway, so nobody expects company e-mail addresses to work (unless the company is called Amazon or Rakuten.)
