Aster seems the lightest (I climb occasionally) and most budget-friendly, which leaves room for accessories. But I’m unsure about the brand’s quality. Anyone have experience with Aster, or thoughts on these options (or others)? Thanks!
With both the Performer and the Aster you have to consider that they are rim brake bikes. Nothing necessary wrong with that, but it might not be easy to find certain components for them in the future. They also greatly limit the width of tires you can install (usually up to 28 mm only). Even if rim brake bikes are lighter, you will probably climb better with the Giant because it has better gears for climbing (46-30/11-36 vs 50-34/11-28 or 11-34).
AFAIK, Aster does no longer exists. So, in case you have any issue, you’ll be probably on your own, or on the good willing of the shop from where you purchase it.
I’m now leaning more toward the Giant TCR, but I think it’s about 200 grams heavier than the Performer (maybe even more). Do you think the GRX groupset can make up for that extra weight when climbing?
P.S. I feel like Giant’s design and paint aren’t that great—unless it’s one of their expensive models. Performer bikes look better, even though looks aren’t a big deal for me (just whining a bit).
That performer looks like an AliExpress special. Horrendous looking thing.
How fit are you? Unless you are very fit and light I’d suggest getting a bike with grx. The gearing is much better for the majority of people riding Taiwanese hills.
200g is irrelevant on bikes this cheap, plus as Membrillo points out the giant has disc brakes, so no brainer.
I have a Rikulau Master 325Ti, size large frame (55cm seat tube). Ultegra groupset, 50/34 and 11/34 gearing. Token Alpe DHuezz wheels and currently has a new set of Michelin Power Road tyres on it. It’s a great bike, very comfortable and responsive, and a great bike for climbing as well as longer days riding. All in, 35k
