Second-hand bookstores / Booktrading

Does Simon or Bongo’s or the other place in Shi-Da take books by the box? I accumulate books at a rapid pace and no longer have room for any more. Time to clear out…

I’ve been people bring boxes to Casa de Socrates at ShiDa. Give it a try. You could go there and talk to Gilbert; he could probably tell you what kind of books he purchases.

There’s also I’d say 1000+ used CDs there.

yes just one is near shida but i sell some books to them and they dont whant this ones any info thanks

Bongos

It’s in the little neighborhood directly north of the Taipower Building, about same distance (maybe 100 meters) from Roosevelt and Xinsheng Roads.

Edit: I just noticed it said sell, not buy. Actually, I think maybe it’s possible.

I would like to buy English used-books (historical fiction, sci-fi, fantasy, etc) instead of buying brand new ones.

I have tried to find them in some used-book bookstore, but I really have no choice at all.

Is there any good English used-book bookstore?

Thanks!
I have visited those stores near Shi-da, I will check others because the thread is about 2 years old.
I will report back after my visit.

Mollie’s Used book store on Heping near shi da has a nice section for english books.

Between a cd shop and a taekwando place in the basement.

How about American textbooks? I’m mainly looking for “international editions” which sell much cheaper than the ones in the US

It depends on what kind of textbook you want.
Business is common.

Generally speaking, getting used English textbooks is easier that getting general fiction.

Going to Mollie tomorrow.

Go to Grandma Nitty’s Restaurant and check out the selection in there. Usually pretty good. Even if they don’t have what you are looking for, Simon is there on weekends and knows what he has at home and other places as well. If you want something specific he can usually find it for you. If he’s not there, just write it in the book and he will get back to you pretty quick.

Whose Books on Zhongshan N. Road, close to the Taipei American School, has a very large selection of used English books.

whose has a rack of 20 and 40NT books now, mostly cheesy novels but i found 2 decent non-fiction.

I was able to search for more information even since I got right keywords from the posts here.

Thanks a lot.

There is a nice bookstore on LungChuan street near the Guting elementary/Taipower station. It’s near Grandma Nitties but on LungChuan/Shi Da night market street. Nearby is a Koala english school tucked in an alley. In the mornings, the bookstore and surrounding areas are part of the early market vendors that stretch to the market stalls.

Anyways, there are some children’s book in the near the window and a Harry Potter book. The english books are stacked into a pile so a little hard to get to. Also there are some history and art books scattered on the shelves. Some nice World War II books.

This bookstore has more english books than I thought. It is a very nice book store and I thought it was just new books they were selling. However, they are a used book store but the name of the book store is in chinese and to the side of the wall.

I went to Mollie used bookstore Taida branch last weekend.

There were few hundreds of English used books and very few French and Japanese used books. Most English used books were in good condition, and they were categorized well in different genres and were arranged well on bookshelves. There was a section for general novels and a special section for Sci & Fantasy. Buyers could browse books easily and the place was roomy so that sometimes buyers can just sat down and read some books there.

It’s a nice place to get some used books or sell books that you don’t need anymore.

Bongos restaurant (one of the advertisers here) located near NTU in Gong Guan has a very large selection of used books from NT$80 ~ $180

I think they have the largest selection of used books in Taipei (2.4 metres tall and 6 metres, 8 ft x 18 ft wide worth of packed book shelves)…and the food is pretty good too!

there’s lots of recent good quality paperbacks and another large choice of sci-fi books…and you get can trade you book(s) back in for half the retail price…they also buy books

for book selection, it’s best to go there outside the lunch and dinner hours as the restaurant is always full (an I do mean packed to capacity every single day!) so it’s hard to get to check out all the books as there are damn diners in the way!

Good news! Whose Books has opened a branch right next to Shilin MRT station, on the right side as you’re heading to Danshui. It’s much more convenient than the place in Tienmu, and they have a good selection of English books in stock with more to come. They will buy your used books or trade them.

I’ve seen so few posts on here about what these stores will actually pay for your books, or what sort of trade agreement they offer. I found that Mollie Second Hand Books will only pay 1-10% or the original price of the book. So in actuality, that’s $3-$30 per book. That hurts to give up some of my good books, in mint condition, for almost nothing. Looks like G’Ma Nitties is doing a better trade, but what else have you found out there?
