Second hand motorcycle

I’ve already searched forumosa and learned about a strip of road (Yanping North Rd. Sec 3) that has a few shops clustered together, but they didn’t have that great of a selection. I’ve spent the last couple of days aimlessly walking around the city finding the occasional shop that has a few used motorcycles for sale. I’m looking for a SYM (Honda Cub look-alike).

I am wondering if there is another cluster of shops that sell used motorcycles in Taipei or better yet, a big used motorcycle/scooter lot (Yes, I’ve searched tealit & taiwanted. I don’t read Chinese so websites in Chinese won’t help).

I know of a smaller cluster of shops around the Badu road and Keelung (Jeelong) road intersection. I personally think Yenping Road has some better offerings though.

Do you mean Bade road? If not, where is Badu road?

Yep, that’ll be the one. Sorry if my poor Pinying causes confusion from time to time.

For everyone who wants to check out the current state of the motorcycle market, new and used, today I stumbled over Motorcycle Street. Its 延平北路三段 Yanping NorthRoad Sec.3

Here is the view on Google Street View: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&hq&hnear=Section+2,+Y%C3%A1nJi%C5%ABYu%C3%A0n+Rd,+Nangang+District,+Taipei+City,+Taiwan+115&ll=25.06665,121.510999&spn=0,0.024548&z=16&layer=c&cbll=25.066546,121.511001&panoid=-uxHPSlFsQ4v72Df9UZHvQ&cbp=12,309.86,0,3.54

They have a lot of medium sized motorcycles (i.e. up to 250cc) on offer, in all ages and varieties. I wish I would have known it when I was on the market.
They also offer test rides if you give them your ID as security.

Makes me want to update my Wolf 125, two person on Highway 7 is really pushing it…

What are opinions on Zing 150, is it much better for relaxed riding than Wolf 125???

But also quite dissappointing if you are looking for things in the 250cc range… Except for a stray CPI 250 most is in the 150cc range, be it KTR, Wolf, Quannon, Zing…

What they do have are the Vennox, but looks a bit unpractical and too showy for my taste…

Why dont they have something like the Suzuki Grass Tracker TU250? Relaxed riding, enough kick for any mountain Taiwan can throw at you and nice retro styling…
topspeed.com/motorcycles/mot … 66115.html

But I guess the same discussion is going on in the SYM, Hartford etc. Thread… viewtopic.php?f=75&t=98403

Thank you for information, I will check this street next Monday

I have an old Zing. I would imagine its better than the Wolf (havent tried one). But its still not enough for two people in the mountains. I’ve done that and its rev city. It’s an overweight custom with an old-technology 150cc engine - what do you expect?

Also, it handles like a delivery truck with a blown rear tire. Performance wise its just a real dog.

It does have a comfortable riding positon. However, thats where comfort ends as the seat is tiny. I got a bigger one and its still pretty uncomfortable. You definitely need to take a break every couple of hours.

What else is good about it? Small engine plus big gas tank = long range. I would say you can drive from Taipei to Hualien via Wuling/Lishan/Taroko and still have some gas to spare.

Also its really reliable and the overall build quality seems pretty high. I’ve thrashed mine for three years and have only had to replace the wheel bearings and chain a couple times. I also replaced the clutch as it was getting old but nothing ever broke down on me.

I’d say its a good cheap option if you like to take it slow (no hard cornering) and explore rather than race around.

Also, you can find those 'Zook Grasstrackers you mentioned. Look on Ruten or Yahoo bid. They seem to be asking in the 90-130,000 range. Not sure what they actually go for.

Hi there,

I tried to search on the forum but didn’t find what I was looking for.
Have you got any adresses where I could find cheap second hand motorcycle. The highest price I am willing to pay is 40K, but the cheapest is the best.
Basically what I want is a motorcycle I will use only on week ends to go around Taipei, and maybe to have long ride some times (long vacations). I am not really looking for high top speed, but I guess 80Kph is a minimum to reach. I will use it with my girlfriend behind, so duo is important, but she is quite used no to have a lot of space .

Anyway, I was thinking to find a Wolf 125/150 or in the perfect case a Hartford VR200 (or CPI 250 but I don’t think I will find one in my price), but I have no ideas where to go to find a good and cheap second hand. Do you have any address?

Thanks a lot.

Ok just after I posted, I found the following topic:

forumosa.com/taiwan/viewtopi … 75&t=98460

I guess I will have to take a look at that street as soon as possible.

Do you have any tips to get good price there?
Should we bargain?
Can we get some warranties on the second hand machine we bought there?

Thanks.

If you are after a 150cc then you should be able to find Hartfords, Syms and KTR’s as low as 15K (probably not at a dealer but privately) and probably in the 25-30K range.

I have a 150cc Hartford and it’s reasonably powerful for 2 people (130 kgs). But I think it would stressed going up and down mountains. It is good for cruising around town however in addition to the twice monthly weekend trip. It would be preferable to get a bigger bike but I’m not sure how possible that is with a 40K budget.

I think you’ll definitely be able to bargain and you might get a warranty. I bought mine from a foreigner and she said there was still 4 months remaining on her warranty (I think engine only but I can’t remember). The only maintenance that I’ve done are oil changes, a new battery and a new rear tire. However I did discover that it had a Sym center stand that wasn’t wide enough for the correct rear tire. That probably means that it was in an accident at one point but I’ve had it for 1.5 yrs with no problems.

You overlooking chabudo logic: I found a cheap centerstand but it’s for a smaller bike, so I’ll put a skinny tire on my bike so I can use the center stand.

The question is why did the center stand need replacing? I think it’s impossible to wear this item out.

i have seen many times that people would take of and the center stand is still half way down… so they will hit it in some corner on the road… i presume that under that circumstance it could get some damage over time…

So I have used ruten, ocar and yahoo.com.tw to search for used scooters in my area. WHich is a pretty small town compared to big bad Taipei.

Now it seems to me that there are hardly any 2nd hand scooters for sale in my small town which can be found on those websites. Yes, plenty of choices in Taipei maybe but i am getting this sneaky feeling that I am gonna have to search for scooter shops physically in order to purchase a scooter which fits my budget and yet is not too shabby.

:frowning:

where can you buy the much-vaunted 2nd hand 50cc?

taipei have more 50cc registered than any other scooters so i would assume 50ccs are the most popular form of two-wheeled transport in the whole of taiwan yet i can’t find them in the small town where i live now… what gives?

I saw a shop in San Chung that sells big motorcycles. Some of these even look pre-Viet Nam War models. They are all together in a shop that has a up stairs from a scooter store on the bottom. I have no idea about the street but I will try and find out the name. I know it is close to the Taipei Bridge.
