Sending a dog to canada without the owner

I’m sure this has been covered before, but I can’t find the specific information I am looking for.

My friend in Canada wants a Tugou because he knows what amazing dogs they are and they are very similar to a dog that his mother fondly remembers from growing up in Vietnam.

I would like to rescue a stray and send it to him, but I have no plans to go there myself. Of course I will keep the dog long enough to get all the shots and see it return to health if necessary. How feasible is this? If it is possible, how much is it likely to cost?

Thanks for any help.

The easiest and cheapest way to do it would be to find someone who is flying to Canada to take the dog with (a pet escort). Taking a dog to Canada is very easy and relatively cheap, like under $10,000nt, depending on weight.
After you’ve rescued or adopted the dog, post here on Forumosa and on other Taiwan websites, looking for people who are flying to Canada who are willing to take the dog. We often get people offering to be pet escorts. You take the dog to the airport with all the necessary documents. You meet the passenger and you check the dog in under the passenger’s name. The dog is considered ‘extra baggage’ so the passenger only has to collect the dog on the Canadian end of the trip and take it thru customs. Your friend would be on the other side of customs ready to collect the dog from the passenger. It’s really simple.

Thanks Ladybird,

I will be leaving here in June and it would be a huge problem for me if I got a dog for my friend and was unable to get find a pet escort before then.

From your post it sounds like it should be no problem to find somebody, but I really want to be sure about this. Do you think I can be close to 100% sure that I will find somebody to help get the dog to Canada?

I’ll start looking right away if I feel confident enough that I can in fact get the dog to Canada.

Well, I certainly can’t promise you that you would find a person to take the dog but the chances are very good. You should post something now to see what kind of a response you get. You need to post the departure location (Taipei? Kaohsiung?) and the arrival (Vancouver? Toronto?) Here are a few websites you can post on:

groups.yahoo.com/group/kaohsiungforum/
tealit.com/
taiwanho.com/
It’s also a good idea to talk to travel agents. Ask them if they can let their clients know that you have a dog in need of an escort.
I’m confident that you will find an escort for a dog by June. Now you just need to rescue a dog
