My parents recently passed away and left me an estate in Shanghai. All the documents that I need to provide are in Taiwan and would need notary through Taiwan court with the help of cross-strait organization in Taiwan. I plan to travel back to Taiwan and at least get start on this matter soon. I was wondering is there a firm in Taiwan that I can hire to help take care cross-strait estate inheritance? The estate is in Shanghai and I am hoping to avoid a trip to Shanghai with the company’s cross-strait assistance.
That said, personally, I would contact these 2 firms that are not on that list:
1. Pamir Law
Managing Partner Nick Chen is a long-time and active member of the foreign community in Taipei. Pamir has offices in Taipei (HQ) and Shanghai, and Nick is a pleasure to talk to: he knows his stuff and is a fount of resources and wisdom
Managing Partner John Eastwood is also a long-time member of Taipei’s foreign resident community. Eiger also has offices in Taipei and Shanghai. John is very smart and very easy to talk to.
The two links above describe what would be the most relevant practices to estate planning. I suggest you reach out to both and ask for advice. If they cannot help you, I expect they would point you towards legal advisors that will.
Best of luck here. What you need to do is hard enough in its - and accomplishing this from around the world, and during a pandemic, is going to be much more hair-raising. Prepare to be very patient and long-term minded. All the best!
