Is that a long-run Japan strategy to suppress China’s ambitions? Or just the normal role of USA ally in the region?

Both.
Japan doesn’t like China, China hates Japan. They run war propaganda movies fighting against Japan on CCTV in China all day long. Ironic because the communist were hiding in the mountains for most of that.
Japan understands they are in trouble if China takes taiwan. And Japan has strong ties and connections to taiwan since the the colonial times.

Yoshimasa Hayashi, in his first news conference as foreign minister, stressed the importance of constructive, stable relations with China.
“Ties between Japan and China are increasingly important not just for our two countries, but for the peace and prosperity of the region and the international community,” Hayashi said.
