Last year I had an acoustic guitar shipped to Taiwan from the US and I had to pay an import tax on it.
Now I’m going to ship the same guitar back to the US and was wondering if I will be taxed again? The guitar was made in the US, but I don’t have the receipt of purchase.
Will I be subject to another taxation? Am I better off flying back with the guitar and checking it in as baggage?
I hand carried my Yamaha acoustic on the plane back in 99. No problemo. No taxo.
Probably, yeah. Check in advance with the carriers in regards to carry-on policies, as a precious few will allow you to carry it onboard in lieu of other carryons.
If you still have the receipt for the import tax payment bring that along.
If you are moving your household back from Taiwan to the US, I only know the German law here, but everything older than six month can be declared as your household.
That includes yachts, planes, cars etc.
But, maybe, not guitars!

Is it a Taylor? If so you could take the neck off and send it as luthier parts which incurs a smaller tax if taxed… Only try this on a Taylor though, as every other acoustic guitars have dovetail joint meaning only a luthier can take it off.
