Shopping trolleys in the streets, a thing here?

So you know how in some countries like Australia, UK, Ireland, Singapore you often see shopping trolleys laying around in the streets and residential areas that have been taken from the shop (sometimes over an hours walk away) full of groceries and then they dump it on the street when done with it, sometimes full of rubbish, often some will throw them into a canal, its usually the chav/bogan/YP types that do it.

I dont remember seeing that here last time i visited though wasnt really looking for it. Does such thing happen here anywhere whether it be a big city or smaller town? Even if you live 5 minutes walk from say Carrefour what would happen if you just walked off with the trolley and pushed it home, would people in the streets say something to you, would police get called, overall whats societies view on it i guess you could say? I dont have any intentions on doing it just wondering overall what would happen.

I imagine in a public housing area someone atleast once has probably done it.

Numerous grocery stores have stairs and aren’t conducive to trolleys to begin with. Big ones like carrefour do. Chuanlian and Carrefour Market often do not have the space for big trollieys.

Many stores do not have parking lots too.

Most people live in row housing full of stairs. The lifestyle just doesn’t allow shopping trolleys to be taken.

It’s theft, and in Taipei CCTV cameras are everywhere. I’m not saying people don’t steal trolleys for their personal use, but stuffing it full of rubbish and leaving it in the street is going to get reported, and the city cleanup team would remove it anyhow.

If you see it call 1999 to have it removed assuming it’s abandoned.

I’ve seen old folks with carts but not shopping trolley. They have enough self respect to buy their own and not steal it from a supermarket.

I find it hard to believe that they do this in Singapore. Western countries sure but they punish damn near all crimes very harshly in Singapore.

I mean it’s very easy for someone to steal trolleys from Costco, but I’ve never seen it done.

Singapore is quite westernized culturally in a few ways, you dont see it often but around HDB flats its a thing sometimes.

But then again Singapore has chavs also (YPs) but usually not to the level you have in the west, i dont think they always harshly punish people, only sometimes.

It don’t think a trolly would be very useful to get around in Taipei for example.

It can’t go on the mrt anyways, so there’s one problem assuming you had your own.

True but the cameras dont stop the gang bangers from fighting in the streets, so probably more of a cultural thing i guess. Though if a foreigner (white person) did it then who knows, ok maybe idk, probably no one has done it wouldn’t be a good look either.

Yea, I don’t know, gangsters seem to have their own issue. It’s more likely that someone would just steal a trolley for the scrap metal value but at around 10nt per kg, it’s really not worth the trouble. Aluminum and copper is worth more.

Does anybody actually walk to the supermarket?

The wonky wheels are a pain to push around the store, imagine trying to push it down a street in Pingtung.

if you’re going in for a heated exchange, cameras are the last thing you’re thinking about.

Yea but you have more evidence against you for fighting if on camera

That thought normally comes after not before, if your thinking about if before your not heated/ drunk enough.

I’ve had carts that wanted to turn left or right now matter where you want it to go. They’re a pain to use even in the store.

I think people might run out and ask you where you were taking it. If you got away from the store people might look at you like you were weird or call the cops if you were a foreigner. I do not recommend it.

Carrefour, as an example, used to have a 100 NT deposit when using a trolley. They stopped it because, I presume, people generally don’t behave like chav shits here.

10nt. You couldn’t stuff 2 50nt coins in it.

My bad. 50 NT. Well spotted

Did the kids tell you 100 and pocket the rest
