My son is travelling to Japan on his Taiwan passport.
Is it best to travel with his other passport also? U.S. if that makes any difference.
Thanks
it gives no advantage to bring the US passport to JP if entering as a TW national. They don’t care, they see a tw coming from and then going back to TW. It would change if you are connecting through JP to the US, then the US passport is required since US citizens must enter the US on their US passport.
Thanks.
So dual nationals would normally only carry both if they planned to also visit the country of the other passport?
The wife always carries the Blue. You never know when you’ll need it these days. Escape Plan 101.
It depends, if the other passport gives u better visa treatment in the other country, then ofc you would travel on that.
My partner always carries both (AU and TW), just in case.
That said, the rule is always enter and leave TW on the TW pp, likewise AU on the AU pp, and any third country on the PP that suits you better.
But ALWAYS use the same one to enter and leave a country - else you will have drama.
No difference. Taiwan passports have visa free entry. I only use my ROC passport to travel on where I can. I use my Australian passport for Philippines and Australia. I have another passport I never use at all.
Not necessarily. I can enter Australian on my Taiwan passport. I do not have to enter on an Australian passport. Same for Ireland. Can enter on any passport. Same for Taiwan, can enter on foreign passport even if you are an ROC citizen.
Not a rule but a choice.
yes, TW doesn’t have the rule to enter on TW passport if you are a citizen. Some countries do instead (like the US for instance).
Also Italy doesn’t require its citizens (if the have multiple citizenships) to enter on the Italian passport.
However, if you want to exercise citizenship rights, you must enter as a citizen of the country, hence enter to TW on a TW passport, Italy on a Italian Passport. Oz has different rules I know.
Makes no difference for Australia. As long as you are an Australian you can use your proof of citizenship to enter.
Kiwi/Aus dual nationals often get only the NZ passport as it is half the price and use that one to enter and leave Australia. - Still treated as citizens.
I’ve very often left Australia on my foreign passport after entering on the Australian passport. Makes no difference in Australia.
When push comes to shove… Taiwan and Italy will treat you as a citizen lol. Taiwan will detain you until you complete conscription for example.
If you enter Taiwan on your foreign passport do you have to exit and then return on the Taiwan one if you want to be here as Taiwanese? Or can you somehow switch without leaving?
Did you successfully link both your other passports on Australia’s advance passenger processing?
Yes. You must leave and re-enter.
No. I enter on the Australian passport and exit on the ROC passport.
I can enter on the ROC passport but never have.
The Irish passport has never been used for travel. Nor will it be.
If you have an Australian citizenship or proof of citizenship certificate you can use that and your foreign passport to board a flight to Australia.
No Visa or ETA needed.
Well citizens cannot use a visa or ETA lol
I should do this, would save me the $400+ for an Australian passport
I like having both when I travel. I keep one in a hotel safe and one on me as ID. That way if one gets lost or stolen I have one as ID to get out of wherever I am.
I always chose one. When I enter Canada, it’s Canadian, for Rest of World, UK.
Why? Cuz Canada’s consular affairs is useless as tits on a bull.
In that situation what would happen on exit? Wouldn’t it flag you as never having entered and therefore questioning by immigration?
