Ski gear in Taipei

I got a last minute chance to go skiing to Nagano, Japan on Wednesday. Unfortunatly all my ski gear is back home in Europe. Does anybody know where in Taipei I can buy some ski clothes?? In particular I need a skiing jacket, pants and gloves. I know I can get them in Japan but they probably cost a fortune there and I dont want to buy good stuff as I already have that at home. Thanks.

There are some shops that sell winter clothes along the south side of Xinyi Road, east of the Daan Forest Park and the Jianguo South Road intersection, near the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT). I don’t know whether they have ski gear but I can’t think of anywhere more likely. Nearest MRT station: Daan.

you can find gloves at costco, and probably a coat as well.

pants would be a little tougher (and getting them there might be easier).

OK, Will check those suggestions this evening. Thanks.

The mountain climbing gear shops on Zhongshan Road, close to Taipei Main Station.

I got a pair of proper ski pants a couple years ago at a tiny mom and pop store that takes factory rejects of gore-tex wear. It’s located on the northwest corner of Jinshan S. Rd and Chaozhou St. near Guting MRT. But it’s hit or miss as you dig through the mountains of winter clothes on your treasure hunt.

bumping the post because we’re planning a last-minute ski/boarding trip in japan. it’s only for 3 days and we’re taking the baby, so we’d rather not spend time shopping for items there. are there any good snowsports (clothing) shops in taipei, or should i just order from the US and pay for the international shipping?

thanks!

There is actually a ski/snowboard shop just outside Hsin Hai MRT station.

great! do you happen to know the name or general orientation (e.g. a block away, SE corner, etc) from the xinhai mrt? (sorry if the question sounds dumb; we just moved here about 1.5 months ago and haven’t gotten around much yet.)

Hsinhai is on the brown line and quite a small station. As you go out the only exit, you will see Hsin Hai Rd on your left and a lane heading off HsinHai where people using the station park their bicycles directly in front of you. The shop is the first in that lane and visible from the top of the stairs of the MRT exit. They do have English on their signage; ski and snowboard shop, as I recall. Never been in it, just walk by it every day. Good luck.
, or should i just order from the US and pay for the international shipping?
I wonder if ordering from Canada would be cheaper as you don’t have to pay for first class postage (the only option) from the States ( on the other hand, the taxes are probably higher).

hey all, just wanted to share:

the only (so they say) burton retailer in taipei is a block north of dun hua/zhong xiao: paradise (at No. 17, Lane 187, Sec. 1, Dunhua S. Rd., Taipei, 106, T´Ai-Pei; 02-2776-6224). the listed phone number is actually for the sister store in the basement, a toy store, i think. i don’t know the number for the actual snowboard store.

i went yesterday and it looked like they only had soft gear (backpacks, clothing, accessories). didn’t see any snowboards. also, in women’s snowboarding jackets, they only carry xs/s. this probably extends to all the clothing in the store, but since i didn’t look at anything but that particular item, i can’t say for sure.

Does anyone know where I can buy a snowboard bag in Taipei?

I’m looking to bring a snowboard back to the US with me, and it looks like the airlines require the board to be in a bag.

Someone who posts here makes custom bike bags. Perhaps they could modify one for you.

I have a bike bag - Rhino, I think, but not the same Rhino as the hiking gear , I think. Perhaps the same person as the one who posts …maybe check the bike forums. Long shot, but it may be your best bet. The lifts at He Huan Shan might not open this year

Thank you for the reply. Unfortunately I won’t have enough time for a custom bag.

Does anyone else have any ideas about a place to buy snowboard bag?

I think you underestimate Taiwanese sellers. In the time since that suggestion wad made, half a dozen different custom designs probably could have been made and delivered.
But anyway, good luck finding your ready made bag. Let us know where you find it.
Peace.
