Skype doesn't work on land lines in Taiwan

There are instances where I must call land lines, and I found that skype doesn’t work anymore. It worked a few years back but now if you call them, you will get a “this call cannot be completed”, or if the call should go through, you get weird behaviors. If you call with a phone it works but not skype. I am not sure if there’s some government/NCC mandate going on, but since calling land lines from a cell phone costs more than calling overseas, I don’t know what else to do. I tried all the caller ID or whatever option, and no, it doesn’t fix it.

You using paid Skype ?

Yes, I am using skype credit to make the call. It never works but it worked before.

Hmmm. Yeah, years ago, we bought Skype credit for use to call government landlines

It’s exactly what I needed to call, government offices. That line is hard to connect to, get put on hold, etc. but there’s no way to call any government line using skype now.

I think the phone companies did this for money.

Have you tried calling from your landline?

I don’t have a land line, few people except for businesses have them.

In that case it might be cheapest to visit the government office in person. You have a T-pass, right?

For this office, it’s not really possible.

The Taipei Times reports that there were over 10 million landlines with only 27% being registered to businesses.

Doesn’t help, but I have a rant. I have been waiting for 3 YEARS for the phone company to reconnect my house wih a landline. It’s beyond frustrating. Meanwhile it took weeks for them to install internet to the street…

Nothing helpful to add other than ya, the phone company here clearly has a directive and not that into doing much outside of it. Tai power even came to fix their poles last year in the devastating typhoon. We told them the phone company never comes after years of asking and complaining. Showed up next day with an excavator and a crew to fix the phine companies lines/poles. Damn.

Can’t say for Skype but google voice still works. It’s cheaper to use google voice to call a Taiwan 02 number internationally (something like 0.03 USD a min) than it costs to call a 02 number from a Taiwan mobile phone number.

I thought google voice only works in the US.

You can dial 011 886 2… for TW numbers after adding some balance to your account.

I use it to call restaurants in Taiwan even though I have TW mobile plan. I use TW mobile data to call through the google voice phone app.

And I can top up using a Taiwan credit card, bank info, and all that?

Skype is a complete disgrace. I had bought credits hoping to be able to call 02 numbers without breaking the bank but then one day it just stopped working. If it’s something the NCC did then it may happen to google voice too.

Isn’t 011, 019 and those the normal way to call out of taiwan? Just uses regular phone billing, no?

011 is for the North American Numbering Plan for international direct dialling.

In Taiwan it’s 00x

My SO had the same problem.
She told me she called the Skype support line and they changed something on their side about her account and now it is working.
