Smiley Poll

Which one of the following best describes your smiley usage?

  • I have never used a smiley in my life! I’m a total abstainer.
  • I admit that I once used smileys, but I’ve been clean for more than a year.
  • I occasionally use smileys, but no more than once every ten posts. Honest!
  • Sure, I use smileys once every post of two, but I’ve got it under control.
  • I’m a heavy smiley user. I use them in almost every post. But hey, it’s not like I’m on crack or something!
  • I’m a binge smiley-er. I sometimes post a row of three or four of the same smiley.
  • You only live once! Sex, drugs and smileys, I say! My typical post has no words, only smileys.

I have never used a smiley. I’m not talking about the fancy ones with horns and stuff, but any smiley at all. Am I weird? Am I alone? Have I missed out an important ritual leading to Internet maturity? Or have I saved myself a life of sneaking smileys into messages while my boss isn’t looking?

Hakka,
Have you been possessed by formosa?

Sorry, I meant to type, "Hey everyone, how often do you use smileys?

  • Never
  • Once in a while
  • Sometimes
  • Often
  • Always"

But then I got this funny feeling in my perineum and saw a vision of a flying eyeball and when I came to that poll was already typed in and sent.

Perhaps they’ve always been one and the same … wonders never cease!

That’s true, just like how when you are posting, Blueface666 isn’t, he he.

Damn, you got me! :imp: But then again, I think there are more similarities between you and “the poster formerly known as formosa” than there are between me and Blueface!

I am thinking about changin my handle to “Smiely” then everybody will accept me. Even when my grandma is as bad as punk too asheen.

I just realized I have used the “quote” function before and thereby recycled the smileys used by others. I’m a facilitator! The shame!

I can’t get enough smilies :P, I think we should have more smilies  Or do I use smilies to make up for myinadequate genitals :x :?:
:?

More smiley variety I say.

Even the offensive smilies posted by Alleycat a while ago were pretty good. X-rated smilies. Smilies to put a smile on your face.

Hey Da-Bian uses smilies in his sig.

no, smilies here because I can’t remember the short cuts (wink). I am using the “quick reply” feature (twisted)

Maybe. Does “mircrsoft” mean more to you than the name of a computer company?

Re: the use of smileys. Most sites that deal with smileys simply explain what each smiley means. Any comments of the appropriateness of smileys tend to point out that smileys should not be used in business correspondence. For example, according to the site, learnthenet.com:

"Use a smiley to make sure that a statement is not misunderstood.

Smileys are typically used in personal e-mail and are not considered appropriate for business. They should rarely be used in the office. If what you are writing needs a smiley for better understanding, most likely you should not be delivering this message via e-mail. Even with a smiley, someone may misunderstand you."

Also, in this site, the “The Qwik-N-Ez Grammar-meter Flamage Guide v1.1” gives flamers 25 negative points for “excessive” use of smileys, although no definition of “excessive” is given.

The debate rages on.

I still refuse to use smileys. I understand that in face to face communication, the face is important to convey meaning and nuance. So, I have decided to include the text indications in my posts. [knocks scab off oozing pustule] This method is not as “girly” as using emoto-icons. [extracts bugger covered pinkie from snot clogged left nostril]

Indeed. Smileys are illogical.

Well, I use smileys because I think it’s cute, it’s another good way to express my feelings since I am not good at expressing myself, and some of the smileys do exactly what I do / did while I am here, writing responses. I love it!! I think we should have more similys. Maybe one day we can just use it to communicate. haha…( gotta put that in there)
