Usually in PE departments of schools, as they have a budget for either clothing or whatnot.
However, as @cjasonc says, the corruption ‘value’ is miniscule compared to construction or business/industry.
Yea, I mean I heard of game rigging, and stuff, but there’s probably far more corruption in claw machine shops.
In Taiwan, government subsidies don’t happen unless there is a way for folks up top to skim money. In sports, unless gambiling, there isn’t many ways to skim money.
I guess explains the massive public transportation subsidy.
I heard from some taiwanese that corruption is tolerated as long as it results in objectives being done. Like say if people’s standard of living improves, they’re fine with corruption.
Just an excuse to hide their shitty ethics.
correct, South Korean culture is extremely competitive and kids are taught from a young age to always give the extra 20% to be number one.
This is they have so many world-class athletes, celebrities, business-people, and so on.
On the flip side, this competitiveness and ‘filtering out the weak’ mentality produces a dark side - increasing numbers of younger Koreans suffer from severe the very severe mental illnesses (great sources in this article Mental health in South Korea - Wikipedia) with suicide rates increasing dramatically in the last decades.
Sure, Taiwan has a lot of problems with corruption, etc.
But don’t forget, for a tiny island nation, it punches way above its weight.
This is an opinion. I’m not a huge kpop fan but I have to admit it’s far more appealing to western ears than what Taiwan produces. I believe if you look objectively at the music of both countries, you’ll find that Korea has been able to better incorporate more diverse musical ideas. On the other hand, Taiwan’s music still gets held back as it must target the ethnic han population which has had its growth stunted due to government intervention in the arts.
I’m by no means a fan of Taiwans music, but don’t forget Taiwan used to be a player in Asian pop music. And at least that music was real music at that time. Kpop is just irredeemable gimmicky shite.
Kpop is popular because they just put a bunch of good looking people with slick choreography.
East Asian pop music is crap.
Our aboriginal music—that’s good stuff we need to be selling.
Whew. I thought he was serious. I was like, no way Taiwanese people think sports is that important.
First off, I agree that Indigenous music in Taiwan is amazing! Lots of great examples are in this dedicated thread:
But is it “our” aboriginal music? Who is “we” and do “we” own this creative work? Unless you’re Indigenous and unless this is your work, hands off of the possessives.

I think @OysterOmelet is just making sure everyone knows he is Taiwanese.
I would hope any tax payer spent money goes to sport infrastructure in general versus supporting the 1% super athletes for Olympics. Aim for healthier nation versus olympic medal pride.
Because it is basically just not importan, all things considered. We have a few people entering, get a few medals. Enough to point out how overtly thy are bending over to Chinese oppression. Mission accomplished. Now let’s focus on real world shit, like commy nazis trying to steal our gold, kill our leaders and rape our females ![]()
I agree with you generally, but if we go to a third country like the USA, where the rules are the most fair, Taiwanese kids have produced a boatload of Silicon Valley company founders and CEOs, while I can’t think of any Korean ones.
Korean and Taiwan have similar GDP per capita. But yet they have amazing professional leagues like KBO. They have great baseball stadiums with lots of food like you’d find in the US.
They also are decent at football with many notable players like Park Ji Sung, the former captain of Man U and now son heung-min who also captains for Tottenham.
Taiwans greatest sports export is Chin Ming Wang who did achieve ace status for the Yankees. Another notable is Hong-Chih Kuo who became and all star. even in our best sport, there’s not been that great of players with some in between AAA-MLB level players.
Korea has had many great baseball players. Some of them were drunks like Koreans are stereotypical known for ![]()
Kang had a DUI that kept him play playing in the MLB and derailed his career. He went back to korea to play and got another DUI
Shin Soo Choo who I believe still has the record for most HRs for an Asian born player also got a DUI.
