Southern Taiwan Earthquake 2/6/2016

In Friday’s ruling, the defendants were given a five-year sentence and fined NT$90,000 each — the same sentence handed down by the lower court. It is the maximum penalty for “homicide through professional negligence.”

Similar to the Kaohsiung gas explosion in some respects (and many other laziness/corruption instances that cost human lives). Building inspections and realy any inspection won’t, and can’t, be done well here due to economics. As my close relative whom works in Kaohsiung dealing with such land/housing issues put it: If the government checked everything, real estate would crash and businesses would go under. It’s impossible.

A sad truth. No point bothering with the inspection people if the society itself tends to go for money over quality of life. I think this aspect is what we as people should be working on.
